NEW DELHI -- An Air India flight from Varanasi reportedly caught fire on Monday night, and had to make an emergency landing in Delhi, according to multiple TV reports. The plane had apparently developed a hydraulic failure, reported NDTV, resulting in fire in its undercarriage.
There were 153 people on board the Khajuraho-Varanasi-Delhi flight, including 146 passengers. The pilot reportedly saw smoke coming out of the undercarriage of the plane, and opted for immediate evacuation. Everyone was evacuated from the plane and are reported to be safe. 11 people including two elderly women suffered injuries, reported Times Now. The aircraft has been towed away after a Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) firefighting team doused the wheels of the plane.
Even though an Air India spokesperson has confirmed that a wheel had caught fire due to a hydraulic leak, AI has however denied any reports of passengers being injured. Meanwhile hospital sources in Medanta said they received an initial call that said 34 people were injured. Two people may be admitted soon for suspected spinal and shoulder injuries.
