More than 600 scientists and their families from ISRO's Space Application Centre, Ahmedabad, watched Ridley Scott's upcoming film The Martian on Saturday, to celebrate the first anniversary of the successful launch of India's Mangalyaan or Mars Orbiter Mission.

The Martian, a populist sci-fi adventure, tells the story of how Mark Watney (Matt Damon), an astronaut stranded on Mars after his crew flees a windstorm, "sciences" his way out of doom. The film is releasing later this week in India on Friday.

“When I used to look at the pictures of Mars, I never imagined the landscape would look so impressive in a 3-D movie. They have done a good job. But you see, scientists are seldom so glamorous,” Tapan Misra, director of SAC who came along with his wife to watch the movie, told The Indian Express.

"Screening this highly realistic film, set in a world not too far advanced from our own, was our way of acknowledging the efforts of the Mars Orbiter team at ISRO led by Dr Arunan on their first anniversary of Mangalyaan entering Mars orbit and being only the fourth space agency to do so," Sunder Kimatrai, executive vice president - Asia Pacific, 20th Century Fox, said in a statement.

The Martian will be dubbed in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
