NEW DELHI -- Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju has hit out at the apex court's remarks against former police officer Sanjiv Bhatt. The court had on Tuesday rejected sacked the IPS officer's petition to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe BJP president Amit Shah "for allegedly trying to scuttle probe into cases of encounter killings".

Katju alleged that the apex court has gone against its own earlier judgements. "An upright police officer who bravely took on the crooked Establishment and exposed its misdeeds, has been castigated by the Court in sweeping language which seems calculated to please the ruling party," he wrote in his blog on Thursday.

Calling the court's remarks — made by a bench of Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justice Arun Mishra — "serious sweeping and intemperate allegations against Bhatt's character", he said that the apex court needed to issue a notice to the former IPS officer why strictures should not be passed against him, as is customary.

This is not the first time that Katju has taken exception to comments made by Chief Justice Dattu, who he has frequently accused of being corrupt and "openly praising Modi".
