An earthquake of 7.5 magnitude struck Afghanistan on Monday afternoon, about 45 kilometres south-southwest of Jarm, reported USGS. The intensity of the quake was earlier measured to be 7.7 and later revised. Tremors were also felt across northern India, lasting two to three minutes on Monday afternoon.
Reuters reported that at least 100 people, including children, have died because of today's earthquake. Most deaths were reported in Pakistan, where at least 76 people are reported to have died. Dawn reported a second earthquake in Pakistan, measuring about 4.8.
AP reported that 12 students were killed in a girls' school in Afghanistan as a result of a stampede during evacuation from the building.
The Associated Press quoted Vineet Gahlot, the director of seismology at the Indian Meteorological Department, as saying that the epicenter of the quake was deep in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.
According to the USGS, the earthquake took place as a "result of reverse faulting at intermediate depths, approximately 210 km below the Hindu Kush Range in northeastern Afghanistan".
Tremors were felt in northern India in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. People were seen rushing out of buildings in alarm, and mobile services were hit immediately after the earthquake. Electricity was cut off in Srinagar following the quake.
