'Bajirao Mastani' Brings Back 'Albela Sajan' In A New Avatar

'Albela Sajan Aayo Re', a Hindustani classical bandish popularised by Ustad Sultan Khan in the '70s, was famously used by Sanjay Leela Bhansali in his film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999). Now, the filmmaker has used a reinterpreted version of the same in his upcoming magnum opus Bajirao Mastani.

Bhansali, who has also composed music this time around, has based this version on a different raga from the original (which was in Raga Bhairav; this version seems to be in either Raga Bhoopali or Raga Deshkar), thereby giving the words a different colour and texture.

This version has been sung by Shashi Suman, Kunal Pandit, Prithvi Gandharva, Kanika Joshi, Rashi Raagga, and Geetikka Manjrekar (in the Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam version, Ustad Sultan Khan, Kavita Krishnamurthy, and Shankar Mahadevan were the playback singers). While the original sounds beautiful in a more contemplative sense, this one sounds more joyous — apt, given that it is picturised on Kashibai (played by Priyanka Chopra) welcoming Peshwa Bajirao (played by Ranveer Singh).

You can watch the full video of the song here.

Bajirao Mastani, starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Priyanka Chopra, releases on December 18.
