In a bid to attract more students and contain school dropouts, West Bengal Education department has decided to provide school shoes free of cost to all students in government primary schools till class four.
"We have decided to provide school shoes free of cost to all students in government primary schools till class four," Education Minister Partha Chatterjee told PTI.
"This initiative is being taken to attract more students.
We will always look into the safety aspect of students in villages. There are instances when students get injured due to travelling barefoot," Chatterjee said.
Currently textbooks are being distributed free of cost to all the students of recognised primary schools upto Class V and free school dress is being provided to girl students of primary schools.
