During the last one year of the new government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's marquee campaigns have inspired many social media trends. #AccheDin was followed by #MakeInIndia and #SwachBharatAbhiyan. The latest hashtag to join the social media race is #SelfieWithDaughter.
On Sunday, Modi launched a campaign asking people to share selfies with their daughters on social media. The campaign is aimed at creating awareness about and curbing female foeticide that is rampant in several parts of India. The world obliged and soon it became a trending hashtag.
However, the campaign is now in the grip of a controversy. First daughter of the late Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was murdered by mobs during the Gujarat riots of 2002, shared a picture of her and her father. "SelfieWithDaughter: This one will haunt him for ever," Nishrin Jafri wrote in a widely shared post on Facebook.
Ehsan Jafri was brutally murdered by a violent Hindu mob and his house was burnt down on 28 February, 2002 during the Gulberg Society massacre. Jafri's wife Zakia Jafri had accused the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for being complicit in the riots. However, an SIT probe had given a clean chit to Narendra Modi’s government with regard to the riots.
And, it isn't just Nishrin who is not supporting the #SelfieWithDaughter campaign.
Earlier, AIPWA secretary Kavita Krishnan had tweeted asking people not to share pictures of their daughters with the Prime Minister, accusing Modi of 'stalking daughters', a reference to the snoopgate controversy.
Krishnan was viciously abused and threatened on social media by Modi supporters.

Television actress Shruti Seth was also attacked on social media after she criticized the campaign. Seth tweeted, "A selfie is not a device to bring about change Mr. PM Try reform. #selfieobsessedPM."
Thereafter, the actress was subjected to abuse and insults on Twitter.
