
At least 17 people were killed as a part of the compound wall of a residential complex collapsed on a shanty after heavy rains in Pune.
Hindustan Times reported that at least four of those killed were children.
The wall collapsed on shanties were built for the labourers working at a construction site nearby, the police told PTI.
According to the Hindustan Times report, most of the labourers were from Bihar and Odisha.
Pune district collector Naval Kishore Ram told the newspaper, “The workers were living in a camp of an under construction site. Wall collapsed due to heavy rains. Prima facie, builder seems to be at fault as he set labour camp right adjacent to the wall.”
The compound wall collapsed around 1:45 am Friday night in the Kondhawa area, an official said.
Pune has been witnessing heavy rainfall.
Police, fire brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel rushed to the spot and launched rescue operation, he said.
Three injured were admitted at a nearby hospital, he said.
