Since the 2019 World Cup, the speculations about MS Dhoni’s future and his retirement have come up frequently and Indian team members have often been asked to clarify.

India head coach Ravi Shastri, in an exclusive interview with The Hindu, said Dhoni will go down as one of India’s greatest players.

On being asked if the team had an open mind about Dhoni returning for shorter formats, Shastri said, “Whether he wants to come back, that’s for him to decide.”

“I have not met him after the World Cup. He has to first start playing and let’s see how things go. I don’t think he has started playing after the World Cup. If he is keen, he will definitely let the selectors know,” he told The Hindu.

Yuvraj Singh said last month that the talk around Dhoni’s future is “unfair”.

“I think it’s unfair to him. The guy (Dhoni) has done so much for Indian cricket. He has been the most successful Indian captain, so you got to give him time,” Yuvraj was quoted as saying by PTI.

On September 12, skipper Virat Kohli’s throwback picture with Dhoni had raised speculations of the latter’s retirement and Chairman of selectors MSK Prasad had to clarify. “I don’t know from where these rumours started. I don’t think they are true,” he had said.
