NEW DELHI -- Communal violence has increased by 17 percent from 2014 to 2015, according to data given by the Modi government in Lok Sabha, this week.
751 incidents of incidents were recorded in 2015 compared to 644 in 2014, The Times of India reported. The number of dead increased from 95 to 97, while the injured jumped from 1,921 to 2,264.
It is significant to point out that while there was an increase in the number of communal incidents from 2014 to 2015, this figure was less that the 823 incidents, 133 deaths and 2,269 injured in 2013, largely due to the Muzaffarnagar riots which occurred when the Congress Party led-UPA government was at the Centre.
Uttar Pradesh (155), Karnataka (105), Maharashtra (105), Madhya Pradesh (92), Bihar (71), Rajasthan (65), and Gujarat (55) had the highest incidents of communal violence, last year.
UP is ruled by the Samajvadi Party, Karnataka is under the Congress Party, and the BJP is in power in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
While incidents of communal violence increased from 92 to 56 in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat saw a decline, TOI reported in a comparison between 2014 to 2015.
UP had 155 incidents of religious violence in 2015 compared to 133 in 2014, and the injured went up 374 to 419. The number of injured was higher than even the communal riot year of 2013, TOI reported.
