New Delhi -- India and Pakistan on Friday agreed to extend an agreement over maritime security, originally entered into in 2005, by five more years.
With both the countries agreeing to extend their cooperation, the memorandum of understanding between Indian Coast Guard and its Pakistani counterpart will now be valid till 17 March 2016, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a release.
The original agreement, which came into effect in March 2006, envisaged cooperation between both the countries through exchange of information on a variety of matters including economic zones violations, apprehended vessels, marine pollution, smuggling, illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and piracy.
The agreement had originally established a communication link which continues to be operational. Under the provisions of the MoU, the heads of Indian Coast Guard and Pakistan Maritime Security Agency meet periodically.
