An inquiry committee formed by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to investigate the February 9 incident where anti-national slogans were allegedly raised on campus has found 21 students guilty of violating the institution’s rules.

Without revealing any specific details, the university administration on Monday said in a statement that the high-level inquiry committee that probed the matter has unanimously concluded that some students have been found guilty of violating the university’s rules and norms. It added that show cause notices will be issued to those students found guilty.

"There are standards and provisions in the university rules to take action in such cases. The high-level inquiry committee's recommendations are based on the rules of discipline and proper conduct in the JNU," an IANS report said quoting the university statement.

"The vice-chancellor has apprised the dean's committee of the summary of the inquiry committee recommendations. The office of the chief proctor will take further action by issuing show cause notices to the students found violating rules and norms of the university," it said.

Set up first on February 10 with only three members, the inquiry committee was later strengthened by inducting two more members. The committee was set up after anti-national slogans were allegedly raised on the JNU campus on February 9 in an event organised to protest against the 2013 hanging of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

On February 12 the university suspended JNU Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, JNUSU general secretary Rama Naga, Anant Prakash Narayan, Anirban Bhattacharya, Ashutosh, Umar Khalid, Ashwarya Adhikari and Shwetha Raj.

This suspension was revoked last week.
