A month after he was caught on camera dragging a Dalit woman before allegedly raping her, the accused in the case surrendered before the court in Mukstar district of Punjab on Friday. He was remanded for three days.
On March 25, the accused, Jagdeep Singh, kidnapped a young Dalit woman from her workplace, which was caught on the CCTV camera of a shop next to the computer centre she worked.
The 25-year-old accused, also known as Jojo, along with his accomplice, Sandeep Singh, allegedly took the 20-year-old victim to a farmhouse and raped her before leaving her at Malout bus stand.
A day after the victim and her father met officials of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, the accused surrendered before the court.
It took five days for a case to be registered under various sections pertaining to abduction and rape. According to the police, the victim and the accused belong to the same village and were known to each other.
“The youth had come to meet the victim. They were chatting so we thought they were acquaintances. But soon he tried to abduct her, and when we protested, he started fighting with us. The entire episode was recorded on the CCTV camera,” Sumit Kumar, the owner of the computer centre, said according to news reports.
Singh’s accomplice who is on the run will also be arrested soon, said police officials.
