A migrant worker from Assam died in Kottayam district, Kerala, on Wednesday after being allegedly tortured by a mob, reported The Indian Express.

Kailash Jyothi Behra, 31, had arrived in Kottayam with three others on Wednesday. While boarding a bus to Chingavanam in the district, Behra got separated from his friends.

Later in the day some locals found him wandering in the village and mistook him for a thief. They tortured him, tying up his hands and legs and forcing him to lie down on the road even when the temperature was about 37 degrees Celsius.

“Police reached the spot on being alerted. We found him foaming at the mouth and rushed him to hospital, where the doctors declared him dead,” The Indian Express quoted a Chingavanam police officer saying.

He further said around 50 men were surrounding the victim near Chiravamuttam temple when the police reached the spot.

An autopsy is set to be conducted for today to ascertain the cause of death. The accused have been identified but no arrests have been made yet.
