NEW DELHI -- A special team of 40 officers from the Central Bureau of Investigation will today begin their probe of the Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh. They are expected to reach Bhopal today to begin their investigation and file a report before the Supreme Court on July 24.

The team was constituted yesterday and will be headed by a Joint Director level officer, reported PTI. This comes after the Supreme Court's order last week directing the investigation into the multi-crore rupees recruitment scam to be handed over to CBI. A large number of people connected to the scam — including suspects and investigators — have died unnatural deaths in the last few years.

While the team consists of officers from various branches of the central investigating agency, the agency remained tight-lipped on the identity of those part of the investigations. However they did dismiss rumours that a Bihar-cadre officer will be heading the CBI team, calling the report "incorrect and baseless".

"In compliance to the orders of the Honourable Supreme Court of India, CBI has constituted a team to take over the investigation of all Vyapam related cases. The CBI team will reach Bhopal on Monday and the begin the process of taking over the investigation," CBI Press Information Officer R K Gaur said to journalists on Sunday.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India H L Dattu, on July 9, had transferred the probe of all cases related to Vyapam scam to the CBI.
