NEW DELHI -- Unidentified men allegedly opened fire on Wednesday morning in Gurgaon. The incident was reported at around 9 am today. The reason for the attack is not yet clear.

According to some eyewitness accounts, three unidentified men on foot opened fire at a Toyota Fortuner. The driver of the SUV tried to swerve away to escape the bullets, ramming into three other vehicles. Two cars toppled over while one autorickshaw was smashed, they said.

Police believe the incident was a gang war, as the man travelling in the SUV was a suspect wanted in a murder case. Cops said that the case was about to go on trial.

"I was near the MG Road metro station and saw ambulances and some blood on the floor," one passerby who did not want to be identified told HuffPost India. "Other people who saw the incident unfold said that the three men came walking towards the car from different directions."

Unconfirmed reports indicated three casualties in the incident. A statement from the police is awaited.

"This place is becoming the wild west," said Rajeev Sinha, president of the resident's welfare association in nearby Essel Towers. "The police are unable to control the traffic and people are always scared."

Sinha said that eyewitnesses had seen someone in a Santro chasing down the occupant of the Fortuner, firing shots, and zooming away. "An autorickshaw driver who was standing nearby told our security supervisor that the Santro driver disappeared quickly after firing shots."

This is a developing story.
