NEW DELHI -- High drama ensued in the national capital today as the Delhi police registered a case of trespassing against Aam Aadmi Party lawmaker Alka Lamba for walking into a shop in Chandani Chowk with her supporters, and shoving the cash machine.
Lamba is facing flak for her act of vandalism which occurred while she was conducting an anti-drug drive on Sunday morning. The episode was captured on a CCTV camera.
Meanwhile, AAP blamed Bharatiya Janata Party's O.P. Sharma for orchestrating an attack on Lamba while she was conducting the anti-drug drive. Lamba sustained injuries after a teenager hurled a stone at her from inside a shop.
The BJP has rejected AAP's claim that this shop belongs to Sharma, who retaliated today by calling Lamba a "drug addict."
"People have said that Lamba is spotted here in the wee hours of the night and I don't think a person who supports drug eradication would come there at that time, between 1 AM to 4 AM," Sharma said, PTI reported.
"It apparently shows she is an addict herself. I am not giving any anti-women remark. I respect women but if you try to portray Phoolan Devi as a mascot of women power then it won't work. She is a drug addict who under the effect of drugs had turned violent," he said.
Lamba said today that she entered the shop, which was vandalised, after the attack. AAP spokesperson Ashutosh told Times Now that toppling the cash machine was a "natural" reaction for someone who had been attacked.
This latest episode is is likely to aggravate the ongoing power struggle between the Delhi government and the BJP-ruled Centre, with AAP pushing for the national capital to attain full statehood so that the ruling party has complete control over the police and appointment of officials.
On Sunday, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of engaging the Delhi police for targeting AAP leaders. Speaking at a public rally, Kejriwal said that the Delhi police had arrested three of its lawmakers in the past six months, but all 67 MPs were willing to work from Tihar jail.
"PM used to say, I won't be corrupt and I won't allow corruption," he said. "That seems to be forgotten. Now, he seems to be saying that I won't work and I won't allow anyone else to work."
