41 Years Later, Big B Recreates His Iconic 'Deewar' Pose At Literally The Same Spot

On Monday, acting legend Amitabh Bachchan posted on Twitter a picture of himself reclining in a chair at a studio. Nothing unique about it, except that the actor was caught in the same pose in the same studio and at in fact the same location (okay the chairs differ but maybe that's a good thing) exactly 41 years ago.

Back then, it was for a moment in 'Deewaar' (1978), which went on to become one of his best-loved films; and the pose itself became so iconic that there is even a mural dedicated to it in Mumbai's Bandra area.

Coincidence or not, there's one thing that stays the same: Bachchan Sr never fails to make a statement.

Kabul Explosion: NATO Coalition Convoy Targeted In Suicide Attack

KABUL, Afghanistan -- A suicide attacker driving an explosives-packed vehicle targeted a NATO military convoy in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Tuesday, killing at least one person and wounding up to 24, police, military and government officials said. Two U.S. soldiers were also injured in the attack.

"It was a suicide car bomber," said Kabul deputy police chief Sayed Gulagha. The blast sent a huge plume of black smoke over the city and scattered glass and metal across the main highway to Kabul's airport.

A spokeswoman for NATO's Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan, U.S. Army Capt. Susan Harrington confirmed that two American soldiers were injured in the attack, sustaining minor injuries.

She said all personnel and vehicles had been removed from the attack site.

The Taliban sent a text message to The Associated Press claiming responsibility for the attack. Attacks on foreign forces' convoys, as well as hotels and residences used by foreigners, have been regular incidents in Kabul.

At least two of the convoy's armored vehicles were badly damaged in the explosion, which happened around 1.20 p.m. less than a kilometer (half a mile) from the American Embassy. Embassy spokeswoman Heather Eaton said all personnel were accounted for.

The spokesman for the Interior Ministry, Sediq Sediqqi, said that at least one person, a civilian, was killed in the attack and at least 24 wounded.

Chief of Kabul hospitals for the Ministry of Public Health, Kabir Amiri, said the wounded included four children and three women.

Eyewitnesses said the attack happened during early afternoon prayers, and that people who rushed out of a nearby mosque had turned on the foreign soldiers and journalists, throwing stones at them.

The blast badly damaged at least two of the heavily armored military vehicles in the convoy.

The attack happened as government employees were leaving their offices and roads were choked with vehicles as the working day is shortened during the Ramadan fasting month.

Eyewitness Ahmad Farhad said: "I saw a Toyota Corolla target the convoy of foreign forces, I saw two to three damaged vehicles and wounded victims were everywhere and there was no one to help them."

It comes a week after an audacious attack on the nation's parliament, which highlighted the ability of insurgents, who have been fighting to overthrow the Kabul government for almost 14 years, to enter the highly fortified capital to stage deadly attacks.

Also on Tuesday, a suicide attack on the police headquarters of southern Helmand province killed up to three people and wounded more than 50, including policemen, officials said.

Omar Zawak, spokesman for the governor of Helmand province, said most of the injured in the Tuesday morning attack were women and children.

Police spokesman Farid Hamad Obaid said a car packed with explosives was driven into the back wall of the police headquarters in an attempt to breach a gate. All the gunmen fled the area, he said.

Also Tuesday in eastern Paktya province, three people were killed and one wounded when their vehicle hit a roadside mine, the provincial police chief Zalmai Oryakhel said.

Jayalalithaa Returns To Assembly With Massive Victory

CHENNAI -- AIADMK general secretary and Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa returned to the Tamil Nadu assembly on Tuesday with a record victory margin from the Radkhakrishnan Nagar constituency here.

Jayalalithaa polled 160,432 votes while her nearest rival, Communist Party of India's (CPI) C. Mahendran, got just 9,710 votes -- a victory margin of 150,722 votes.

The chief minister bagged more than 50 percent of the 245,000 electorate.

As noisy celebrations erupted at the AIADMK headquarters and outside Jayalalithaa's residence, Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah congratulated her over her landslide win, an official statement said.

AIADMK activists and leaders generously distributed sweets to all and sundry and burst crackers to celebrate the thumping victory -- a record of sorts for Jayalalithaa.

An elated Jayalalithaa thanked voters and AIADMK supporters for her massive victory and said the result was a forerunner for the 2016 assembly elections.

This is the seventh by-poll victory for AIADMK since it came to power in 2011. The party has won all the by-polls held since 2011.

As counting of votes began at 8 a.m. here on Tuesday, Jayalalithaa began to build a massive lead over her rivals.

In 2006, AIADMK's P.K. Sekarbabu polled 84,462 votes in Radhakrishnan Nagar. In 2011, P. Vetrivel of AIADMK got 83,777 votes and defeated Sekarbabu, who by then was in the DMK. Vetrivel's victory margin was over 31,000 votes.

This time the polling percentage was higher at around 74 percent, up form 72.72 percent in 2011.

While there were 28 candidates in the fray, only CPI's Mahendran was viewed as a serious opponent for Jayalalithaa.

Major opposition parties like the DMK, the PMK, the DMDK, the Congress, the BJP and the MDMK stayed away from the contest.

The two Left parties - CPI and CPI-M - fielded Mahendran as their joint candidate.

However, going by the votes polled by Jayalalithaa, it is clear the vote banks of the opposition parties fell into Jayalalithaa's kitty and did not go to the CPI candidate.

The Radhakrishnan Nagar seat fell vacant after AIADMK's Vetrivel resigned from the house to facilitate Jayalalithaa's re-election to the assembly.

Jayalalithaa, elected from Srirangam in 2011, lost that seat and the chief minister's post after a trial court in Bengaluru convicted her in the disproportionate assets case.

The Karnataka High Court upheld her appeal and acquitted her of all charges. Jayalalithaa was again sworn in as chief minister, but she has to get elected to the assembly within six months.

The Karnataka government has gone on appeal against the high court order in the Supreme Court.

This ain't no boozehound for sure: last Saturday, pop star Rihanna discovered a little puppy in a bar and decided to take it home with her. The singer was partying at the Los Angeles nightclub 10AK and found the tiny dog in the bathroom of the club. Her friends were delighted with the bizarre discovery and shared on Snapchat videos of Rihanna and her atypical date, who insisted on chewing on her zipper.

It wasn't love in a hopeless place, but it was love, and Rihanna just couldn't bear to part with the dog. She can be heard explaining the entire incident on video, saying "Well, I found him in the bathroom somewhere, and he ran up to me." A friend of the star also commented on the incident saying, "she literally just went to the club, came back with a cage, wee-wee pads, food — and a f***king dog!".

Modi Refused To Meet Kejriwal Today, Says AAP

NEW DELHI -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not meet Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday even though the Aam Aadmi Party chief had sought an appointment ten days ago to discuss issues of governance in the capital.

"Last week when we asked about the chief minister's request for a meeting, we were informed that PM was occupied with other national responsibilities," Nagendra Sharma, AAP spokesperson, said on Tuesday.

Sharma said that Kejriwal was advised to meet Finance Minister Arun Jaitley or Home Minister Rajnath Singh if the matter was urgent.

The AAP government has been locked in a battle over appointment of officials with Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung, who represents the centre in Delhi. Kejriwal reportedly wanted to discuss this power struggle with the prime minister.

On Monday, the Delhi High Court landed a blow on the Kejriwal camp by ruling that Mukesh Kumar Meena, who was appointed by Jung on June 9, would remain the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) chief, and it dismissed the AAP government's petition to restrain Meena from entering the premises of the ACB.

Nestle Gets Green Signal To Export Maggi, Domestic Ban To Continue

MUMBAI — The Bombay High Court on Tuesday allowed Nestle to export Maggi noodles instead of recalling and incinerating them. The ban on domestic sales will continue.

The court will again hear the matter on July 14. Maggi was banned by the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on June 5 after it tested several samples and found excess quantities of lead and monosodium glutamate.

Since then, Nestle has incinerated 170 billion packs of Maggi, said the company's counsel Iqbal Chagla to the two-judge division bench of the court. Maharashtra government's counsel said instead of incinerating the noodles in cement factories, they can be exported to countries who have found it to be safe for consumption. The judges agreed.

Nestle shares gained 4 percent in intraday trade after the judgement.

Nestle India had challenged the ban on grounds that it was 'unauthorised, arbitrary, unconstitutional for violating right to equality and trade', and violative of principles of natural justice, arguing that the company was not given a proper hearing.

Nestle exports India-made Maggi noodles to Singapore, Canada, United States, United Kingdom and Australia. The US Food and Drug Administration is testing Maggi samples for safety, and Australia has suspended imports. Singapore's food regulator tested the noodles and found that they do not pose a safety risk.

Jailed DU Professor Saibaba Gets Bail On Health Grounds

$

Jailed Delhi University professor GN Saibaba got a temporary breather on Tuesday when the Bombay High Court granted him bail to undergo medical treatment. Saibaba, who had been arrested in May 2014 by the Maharashtra police for alleged Maoist links, has been in jail since then.

The court on Tuesday observed that it would fail in its duty to protect Saibaba's fundamental rights if it didn't grant him bail for treatment for his failing health. They gave him three months' bail on personal bond of Rs 50,000.

“If extraordinary powers enshrined under Article 226 is not exercised, this court will be failing in its duty to protect the fundamental rights of professor G N Saibaba, professor of English at Delhi University. Therefore, this court is inclined to direct respondents (jail authorises) to release him for three months for medical treatment and support of his family,” Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice S B Shukre observed in court.

The English professor has been in the Nagpur Central Prison but needs his family support, who are based in Delhi. Activist Purnima Upadhyay had written a letter highlighting Saibaba's failing health condition. He was wheeled into court for assistance for his bail hearing as he had dislocated his shoulder. His right hand is already crippled due to a spinal problem.

Though the court had earlier asked prison authorities to shift Saibaba to a hospital of his choice, the government facilities are not equipped to treat him, his counsel has claimed. Despite the public prosecutor's concerns that Saibaba might tamper with evidence if given bail, court deemed that he should be allowed to seek proper medical treatment.

"We are satisfied that if Saibaba is not released on temporary bail for medical treatment then there is a chance that his life will be at risk," the judges observed.

Moody's India Report Says Disappointment Is Creeping In Over Modi Government Reform Pace

$
0
0
NEW DELHI -- Flagging subdued rural economy as a 'credit negative' for India's sovereign rating, global giant Moody's today said there are growing concerns about risk of policy stagnation and "some disappointment" has emerged over the pace of reforms under the Modi government.

In its latest 'Inside India' report, Moody's Investors Service said the consensus view on India's economic growth prospects is relatively optimistic and in line with Moody's baseline forecast of 7.5 per cent expansion in current fiscal.

"Forecast represents the highest projection amongst G20 economies, and provides a key pillar of support for the Baa3 sovereign rating and positive outlook," it said. This is the lowest investment grade rating, but a 'positive' outlook indicates room for further upgrade.

However, the results of the latest polls conducted by it has showed "some disappointment...with regard to the pace of reform under the administration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and increasing concerns about the risk of policy stagnation.

"Specifically, almost half of the poll respondents identified sluggish reform momentum as the greatest risk to India's macroeconomic story." Moody's said "the multi-party, federal democracy in India underpins a gradual pace of policy implementation" and many of the policies are positive for India's institutional strength. However, the direct impact of growth-enhancing reforms is only likely to take full effect over a multi-year horizon, it said.

Moody's further said it expects India's weakened rural economy to remain subdued through the fiscal year ending March 2016, particularly if the risk of below-average monsoon rainfall materialises.

"A sustained soft patch for India's rural economy would weigh on private consumption and non-performing assets in the agricultural sector, (which is) a credit negative for the sovereign and banks," Moody's Vice President and Senior Research Analyst Rahul Ghosh said.

narendra modi
Sluggish reform momentum was cited as the greatest risk to India's macroeconomic story

Citing results of polls conducted during the first annual Moody's and ICRA India Credit Conference in Mumbai last month, Moody's said almost half of the respondents believed "that sluggish reform momentum represents the greatest risk to India's macroeconomic story going forward". Moody's said however that the recent policy changes are slowly taking effect and the positive impact of growth -enhancing reforms is only likely to take full effect over a multiyear horizon.

"Policies including the 'Make in India' campaign, increased foreign direct investment limits in rail infrastructure, defence and insurance, and bills related to mining will all improve India's growth outlook," it said. It added: "The government's recent policy agenda including diesel price deregulation, lifting of the iron ore mining ban, the Coal Mines Special Provisions Bill and the Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Bill will benefit refining, metals, steel and power companies. Other sectors have yet to see a specific boost from government policies under the Modi administration, but are likely to benefit from the government's pro-growth agenda."

In the survey, sluggish reform momentum was cited as the greatest risk (47 per cent) to India's macroeconomic story over the next 12-18 months, followed by infrastructure constraints at the second place (38 per cent) and external shocks at the third (10 per cent). The resurgent inflation and fiscal performance came as the fourth and fifth biggest concerns.

Asked what would be the key driver of credit conditions for Indian corporates over the next 12-18 months, respondents named government policy implementation on the top (56 per cent), followed by monetary easing at the second place (23 per cent), while commodity price weakness and external factors came in at the third and fourth places. The project approval delays emerged as the biggest challenge for the infrastructure sector, followed by lack of available funding, weak financial health of the sector and loss of reform momentum as other main concerns.

On Indian banks, the survey noted that the "trough" is yet to be seen in the asset quality cycle and "banks will continue to wrestle with weak asset quality in the coming 12 to 18 months, which will act as a constraint on overall economic growth".

The rural income growth in India has been stuck in the mid-to-low single digits so far this year, well off the 20 per cent-plus rates clocked in 2011. The slower rural income growth is partly the result of increased fiscal restraint by the central government, which Moody's believes is unlikely to change in the coming quarters. Elaborating further on policy reforms, Moody's said the plans to cut the country's corporate tax rate to 25 per cent from the existing 30 per cent over the next four years will be "credit positive" for all Indian corporates insofar as it will reduce their tax expenses and increase their competitiveness over the medium term.

Moody's further said India's pro-cyclical industries will benefit from improving credit conditions through the current fiscal, while the country's LNG import book was credit positive for companies like GAIL. The public sector banks' credit profiles would improve only in the medium term, it added.

Nishrin Jafri To Kavita Krishnan: Modi's #SelfieWithDaughter Campaign Is Mired In Controversy

During the last one year of the new government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's marquee campaigns have inspired many social media trends. #AccheDin was followed by #MakeInIndia and #SwachBharatAbhiyan. The latest hashtag to join the social media race is #SelfieWithDaughter.

On Sunday, Modi launched a campaign asking people to share selfies with their daughters on social media. The campaign is aimed at creating awareness about and curbing female foeticide that is rampant in several parts of India. The world obliged and soon it became a trending hashtag.

However, the campaign is now in the grip of a controversy. First daughter of the late Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was murdered by mobs during the Gujarat riots of 2002, shared a picture of her and her father. "SelfieWithDaughter: This one will haunt him for ever," Nishrin Jafri wrote in a widely shared post on Facebook.

#SelfieWithDaughter: This one will haunt him for ever..

Ehsan Jafri was brutally murdered by a violent Hindu mob and his house was burnt down on 28 February, 2002 during the Gulberg Society massacre. Jafri's wife Zakia Jafri had accused the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for being complicit in the riots. However, an SIT probe had given a clean chit to Narendra Modi’s government with regard to the riots.

And, it isn't just Nishrin who is not supporting the #SelfieWithDaughter campaign.

Earlier, AIPWA secretary Kavita Krishnan had tweeted asking people not to share pictures of their daughters with the Prime Minister, accusing Modi of 'stalking daughters', a reference to the snoopgate controversy.

Krishnan was viciously abused and threatened on social media by Modi supporters.

Delhi VAT Raise: Opposition Trying To Create Misconception, Alleges AAP

$

NEW DELHI -- Amid sharp criticism over the VAT Amendment Bill, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday said that the opposition has been trying to create misconception among the people.

AAP spokesperson Raghav Chadha urged the opposition parties to take a good look at the VAT Amendment Bill.

"A few things have been mentioned in the Bill that requires study. One is that, the Sheila Dikshit Government had increased the VAT's penalty that used to be imposed on traders by five percent. Our government reduced it. Secondly, according to the Bill, there is a Schedule IV, which mentions goods like tobacco, alcohol, etc. 12.5-20 percent tax used to be imposed on such goods. We said that the legroom of the Schedule be increased to 30 percent. We never increased the VAT. We have just tabled the amendment for the flexibility of VAT department. The 30 percent expansion decision has been taken with this motive," Chadha said.

"And, this decision has been taken not only by the Delhi Government. Northern Ministers' states finance ministers had a meeting where it was decided that under the principle of uniformity, VAT will be imposed on everything so that it doesn't happen that a product which is available at Rs. 90 in Delhi is priced at Rs. 100 in Haryana. Geographical arbitrariness in taxation happens and that is what we wanted to reduce," he added.

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) chief Ajay Maken, earlier in the day, alleged that the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government's move to increase the upper limit on Value Added Tax (VAT) reflects their immaturity.

He had said that it was extremely shocking that the AAP, which had during the Delhi Assembly polls promised to lower the VAT, have increased the same from 20 percent to 30 percent.

The Delhi government moved a proposal in the assembly on Monday to increase the upper limit on VAT from 20 percent to 30 percent, opening up the possibility of maximising the levels on 11 items, including piped natural gas, compressed natural gas, kerosene, liquor, lottery tickets, tobacco and gutka.

'Mohalla Assi' Stopped From Release For Hurting Religious Sentiments

NEW DELHI -- The release of Bollywood film 'Mohalla Assi' has been halted throughout the country by a Delhi court which today prima facie found it hurting religious sentiments and said it should not hit the theatres till allegedly offending scenes and dialogues are removed.

The court restrained the movie's director, producer and Central Board of Film Certificate (CBFC) from releasing the film on July 3 till further orders. The film stars Sunny Deol, Ravi Kishan, Sakshi Tanwar among others.

Noting that the trailer showed the movie to be based on the surroundings of the Assi Ghat in Varanasi on the banks of river Ganga, the court said "in the entire trailer clip, characters have been shown using very filthy language."

Read: 'Mohalla Assi', Featuring Sunny Deol, Is About More Than Just Profanity And Ganja

"In one scene, a character dressed as Lord Shiva is shown using filthy language. Use of such language by Lord Shiva makeover is really hurting. It may (hurt) religious sentiments of the people in case the movie is released and seen by public at large."

"Therefore, at this stage, a prima facie case is made out that until the religiously hurting scenes and dialogues/words wherein the abusive and filthy language has been used, are removed, the movie should not be released," Civil Judge Kishor Kumar said.

The court passed an ex-parte ad-interim injunction order against CBFC, the producer and director of the film and others saying they are "restrained from releasing the movie 'Mohalla Assi' all over India, scheduled to be released on July 3, 2015 till further orders".

Read: Sunny Deol Faces FIR For Abusive Language In 'Mohalla Assi'

The court directed plaintiff Gulshan Kumar to get the order served to the defendants who have also been summoned for July 13.

The court passed the order on Kumar's complaint seeking to restrain the director and producer from releasing the film on the grounds that its characters were shown using abusive and filthy language.

The plaintiff's counsel also showed the trailer of the movie to the judge and said that in a scene, one character dressed as Lord Shiva has been depicted using "very abusive and filthy language", charging few hundred rupees for snaps with people at the Ghat.

They said the trailer has been available on social media portals since June 12 and the plaintiff saw it for the first time on his mobile on WhatsApp on June 26.

The plaintiff also sought to restrain the defendants from advertising the movie until the alleged objectionable scenes are removed from it.

Plea To Declare Indira Gandhi's Murder A Suicide Thrown Out By Court After 29 Years

$

Was former prime minister Indira Gandhi's assassination really a "suicide through arranged murder"? Looks like we'll never know. The Gujarat high court, headed by acting Chief Justice V M Sahai, threw out a plea seeking Gandhi's murder to be declared a suicide on Monday, 29 years after the petitioner first approached court.

So was it because it was factually inaccurate? Nope.

It's because the petitioner, one Navnitlal Shah, never once came forward to press her case.

"The prayer of the petitioner is to declare that Mrs Indira Gandhi committed suicide, which cannot be granted. The petition is accordingly dismissed," Justice Sahai said, throwing out the petition.

"No one has put in appearance to press this petition," the court noted. This was the first time the petition had come up for hearing.

According to the petition, which was filed in 1986 — two years after Gandhi was assassinated by two of her bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, in her residence — Gandhi's assassination was actually an orchestrated suicide and she arranged her murder so her son Rajiv Gandhi could be elevated to prime minister.

The plea alleged that the country's first and only woman prime minister had "committed suicide through arranged murder to give power to her son Rajiv Gandhi as hereditary successor and the elections of 1984 were based on national sacrifice made by Indira Gandhi."

Seems like some mysteries of history will remain.

Upcoming Aerial Ropeway Might Be The Solution To Kolkata's Traffic Congestion Issues

Ever thought of travelling on ropeway in Kolkata?

The wait may get over soon as a company is all set to introduce Curvo, the world's first non-linear aerial ropeway, for second tier urban commutation in two sectors in the city along with the state government.

"It was a dream to provide a pollution-free and traffic-free mode of transportation system to people and we will be the first in the world to introduce this non-linear aerial ropeway system," said Shekhar Chakravarty, Conveyor and Ropeway Services Private Limited (CRSPL) Managing Director.

The two sectors were Sealdah to BBD Bagh area and from Howrah to the new state secretariat at Nabanna. "We have carried out a detailed survey on certain congested major arterial roads like Sealdah, College Street and Park Street and have submitted a complete plan to the state government," said company director Rachana Mukherjee.

"We have spoken to the Urban development minister and KMDA chairman Firhad Hakim and Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) is working on the proposal," said Chakravarty. "The Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Service Ltd (ILFS) was working on the detailed project report (DPR) and once that was ready, tenders would be floated." He also added that a test run of the prototype has been conducted on 500m stretch at Bhasha near Joka and the Kolkata-based company was in the process of applying for certification to open the prototype to the public.

The service, operational on electricity, would be on steel frames spreading at a distance of around 90-100 m running through the existing arterial and other roads to avoid congested streets of the city. "There would be elevated stops at every distance of 750 m and the cars would be able to gain speed of about 4.25 m per second (12.5 km/hour) with the ability to carry an estimated 2,000 people every hour, " said Chakravarty who was hopeful of introducing Curvo in 18-24 months. "The cabins will have an accommodation capacity of 8-10 persons and will run at intervals of 22-25 seconds," he said.

Maintaining that Kolkata has a potential of having 100 non-linear ropeways, Mukherjee said, "Curvo will require nominal ground space for stations and rope-supporting portal frames. It has nothing to do with road space and the traffic flow or with the pedestrian flow below. Since it will run on electricity, there will not be emission of any poisonous gas also. It is reasonably noiseless and will travel at an average hourly speed of around 12.5 km despite route alignment." The stations, she said, would have elevators for reaching the station level.

Once a cabin reaches a station, doors will open automatically and facilitate boarding/deboarding at very low speed of .25 metres per second," she said, adding the carrying capacity of the ropeway would be 2,000-2,500 passengers per hour in each direction on a single track. Talking about the costs, Mukherjee said "It will be one-tenth to that of Metro trains. The estimated cost of putting this system in operation will be Rs 20 crore per km. It was learnt that nearly Rs ten crore was spent over the last 5-7 years to design and develop CRSPL's patented product in Joka.

Mukherjee further claimed Bangladesh has shown interest in the Curvo-concept for use at its capital, Dhaka. She also claimed CRSPL, which has a 40 per cent market share in India's ropeway industry, has bagged an order from GTA for a 2.5 km passenger ropeway from Siliguri's Rohini Tourist Complex to Gidda Pahar in Kurseong, besides several other other projects in Rajasthan.

Supreme Court Says Settlement In Rape Cases Is A 'Spectacular Error'

NEW DELHI -- A week after the Madras High Court gave bail to a man convicted of raping a teenager in 2002, and ruled that he should have a "mediation" session with the survivor, who gave birth to a child after the sexual assault, the Supreme Court has ruled that rape cases should not be directed towards "compromise or settlement".

The apex court made the observation in a judgment on an appeal in a rape case from Madhya Pradesh where a man was convicted of raping a 7-year-old.

"We would like to clearly state that in a case of rape or attempt of rape, the conception of compromise under no circumstances can really be thought of," the ruling by Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Prafulla C. Pant says.

The judges referred to a passage from a judgment by a three-member bench in Shimbu and Another Vs State of Haryana:
"Further, a compromise entered into between the parties cannot be construed as a leading factor based on which lesser punishment can be awarded. Rape is a non-compoundable offence and it is an offence against the society and is not a matter to be left for the parties to compromise and settle. Since the Court cannot always be assured that the consent given by the victim in compromising the case is a genuine consent, there is every chance that she might have been pressurised by the convicts or the trauma undergone by her all the years might have compelled her to opt for a compromise. In fact, accepting this proposition will put an additional burden on the victim. The accused may use all his influence to pressurise her for a compromise. So, in the interest of justice and to avoid unnecessary pressure/harassment to the victim, it would not be safe in considering the compromise arrived at between the parties in rape cases to be a ground for the Court to exercise the discretionary power under the proviso of Section 376(2) IPC.”

In the Madras High Court judgment, which has outraged human rights activists in India, Justice D. Devdass said that mediation was the best option for the survivor who is "nobody's wife... an unwed mother.”

“In the facts and circumstances, the case before us is a fit case for attempting compromise between the parties. ‘Mediation’ mode is best suited to them…Keeping the appellant inside the jail and asking him to participate in the mediation talk will not result in any fruitful result,” the judgment said.

"The victim-girl has become mother of a child. But as on date, she is nobody’s wife. So she is an unwed mother. Now there is a big question mark looming large before the girl as well as her child, who is completely innocent,” the judge said.

The survivor, who was 15-years-old when she was assaulted, has told the media that she is not interested in reaching any kind of compromise with the man.

In the context of the Madhya Pradesh case, the Supreme Court said to "enter wedlock" or taking a "soft approach" is a "spectacular error."

"Sometimes solace is given that the perpetrator of the crime has acceded to enter into wedlock with her which is nothing but putting pressure in an adroit manner; and we say with emphasis that the Courts are to remain absolutely away from this subterfuge to adopt a soft approach to the case, for any kind of liberal approach has to be put in the compartment of spectacular error. Or to put it differently, it would be in the realm of a sanctuary of error," the SC judgment says.

NEW DELHI — While the world united in celebrations after the American Supreme Court granted same-sex couples the right to marry in a judgement seen as a milestone for gay rights movement, in India a politician affiliated with the right wing Bharatiya Janata Party tweeted a particularly homophobic comment on Tuesday.

"We respect handicapped persons. Homos are genetically handicapped," tweeted former Union Minister and five-term MP Subramanian Swamy. Swamy, who has a Ph.D in Economics from Harvard, tweets from the verified @Swamy39 handle.

Swamy, a known rabble-rouser on social media, is known to hold controversial views on many things. In 2014, he "appointed" then Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi a Brahmin.

In 2011, Harvard University cancelled his summer school teaching assignments after he wrote an incendiary opinion piece in DNA newspaper arguing that Muslims should have voting rights in India only if they accepted their Hindu ancestry.

The prejudice that surrounds the LGBTQ community in India has serious social and public health consequences. There are 2.5 million HIV infected people among India's 1.1 billion-plus population and the stigma around homosexuality stops those living with the disease from seeking treatment.

Mark Zuckerberg Holds Facebook AMA, Stephen Hawking And Arnold Schwarzenegger Pop In To Ask Questions

When Mark Zuckerberg planned his Facebook 'Ask Me Anything' session, he probably wasn't expecting to be put on the spot by the world's most famous physicist and the 'Terminator'.

Zuckerberg, in a Facebook post, said he will take questions from people for an hour to understand what the "community is thinking about." The question and answer session was in AMA format on Zuckerberg's timeline.

Within minutes of the session, Stephen Hawking and Arnold Schwarzenegger popped in with questions of their own.

Hawking, noting his own interest in a unified theory of gravity, asked, "Which of the big questions in science would you like to know the answer to and why?"

The CEO called it a 'good question' and said he is "most interested in questions about people."

"I'm most interested in questions about people. What will enable us to live forever? How do we cure all diseases? How does the brain work? How does learning work and how we can empower humans to learn a million times more? I'm also curious about whether there is a fundamental mathematical law underlying human social relationships that governs the balance of who and what we all care about. I bet there is," he said.

Next it was 'Terminator' Arnold Schwarzenegger's turn. Schwarzenegger was interested to know about Zuckerberg's workout regime.

Schwarzenegger asked, "Mark, I always tell people that nobody is too busy to exercise, especially if Popes and Presidents find time. You've got to be one of the busiest guys on the planet, and younger generations can probably relate to you more than they can the Pope - so tell me how you find time to train and what is your regimen like?

Zuckerberg said he works out at least three times a week.

There were some other questions for the Facebook boss too.

Why did he invent 'poking'?

Why should we use 'real names' on Facebook?

Zuckerberg also has the most amazing response to a user who asked him how he'd react if he woke up next morning "and there is no Facebook?"

"I'd build it," the Facebook CEO told Aakash Chaudhary.

You can read all the answers to the AMA here.

For the next hour I’ll be here answering your questions on Facebook. Our Townhall Q&As are an important way for me to...

Posted by Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday, June 30, 2015

Here are a few highlights from Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook Q&A:

Next for Facebook: Telepathy

Zuckerberg believes that one day we'll be able to directly share emotions, thoughts, and sensory feedback with each other, just as we currently share text, photos, and videos through social networks. "You'll be able to think of something and your friends will immediately be able to experience it too," he said in one of the comments.

Why did he choose to set his salary at $1?

To this question, Zuckerberg said, "I've made enough money. At this point, I'm just focused on making sure I do the most possible good with what I have. The main way I can help is through Facebook -- giving people the power to share and connecting the world. I'm also focusing on my education and health philanthropy work outside of Facebook as well. Too many people die unnecessarily and don't get the opportunities they deserve. There are lots of things in the world that need to get fixed and I'm just lucky to have the chance to work on fixing some of them."

What's happiness for the Facebook CEO?

"Happiness is doing something meaningful that helps people and that I believe in with people I love. I think lots of people confuse happiness with fun. I don't believe it is possible to have fun every day. But I do believe it is possible to do something meaningful that helps people people every day. As I've grown up, I've gained more appreciation for my close relationships -- my wife, my partners at work, my close friends. Nobody builds something by themselves. Long term relationships are very important," Zuckerberg said in his response.
