ISIS In India: Terror Group Is Trying To Gain Foothold In PoK, Says Army

JHANGAR (NOUSHERA) -- Terror outfit Islamic State (IS) is trying to gain a foothold in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, a senior Army official said today.

"Whatever inputs we have, IS has not taken in a major way, but they are definitely trying to gain foothold in the area (PoK)", General Officer Commanding (GoC), 16 Corps, Lt Gen K H Singh told reporters on sidelines of an army function here today.

He was replying to a question on the threat perception of IS in PoK amid media reports about the terror outfit's presence in the valley.

Lt Gen Singh said that there were around 200 to 225 militants in 36 launch pads across the Pir Panchal range waiting to infiltrate into the Indian side.

The terror infrastructure across the border was intact and training camps were still active, he added.

The Indian Army today celebrated "Jhangar Day" to commemorate the sacrifice made by Brigadier Mohd Usman, who was martyred during the 1947-48 operation in Noushera sector of Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir.

Brigadier Mohd Usman had played a pivotal role as commander of 50 Parachute Brigade during the recapture of Jhangar and the battle of Noushera, which earned him the title of 'Noushera Ka Sher'. He was posthumously awarded the "Maha Vir Chakra".

The officer also laid wreath on the War Memorial and felicitated family members of martyred soldiers and interacted with the locals of Noushera Tehsil who were recently treated in Medical and Artificial Limb Camp.

To a question on whether terrorists were planning to target the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, General Officer Commanding (GoC), 16 Corps, Lt Gen K H Singh said there were general inputs about possibility of such an attack.

"I cannot share specific inputs with you, but yes there are general inputs that terrorists might try to attack the Yatra. There are 13 to 14 Yatras going on in the region," he said, adding terrorist from across the border were planning to infiltrate and create problems.

Lt Gen Singh said that Pakistan continues to support terrorists and the terror infrastructure across the border was intact.

"Though there were fewer incidents of ceasefire violations this year as compared to the previous year, we have credible inputs that terrorists are taking time to re-energise themselves to infiltrate and launch attacks in Indian side," he said.

Commenting on a recent report that terrorists groups have infiltrated into the Indian side through the LoC in the Rajouri sector he said, "As per our multi agency inputs there are no such confirmed inputs of a group having gone through and entered our side."

On a recent report by Amnesty International India, he said, "Let me be clear that Army does not tolerate any human rights violations committed by our men."

"All cases that come to us are investigated by an independent agency. In the past 10 years there were more than 300 allegations of Human Rights violation made against the Army and in only five or six odd cases the complaints were found to be genuine and the guilty were punished," he said.

To a question on whether the militant outfits in Valley were trying to recruit youth in Jammu he said, "They may be planning to recruit volunteers to join their ranks in Jammu as well to increase their area of operations."

"Indian Army is prepared to defeat the designs of the terrorists. The counter terror operations are effective and the Army is making the Indian nation proud," he said.

Jharkhand Girl Commits Suicide Due To Lack Of Toilet Facilities At Home

Being forced to defecate in open fields drove a 17-year-old girl to suicide on Friday, who had repeatedly begged for a toilet at home. The first year BA student from Jharkhand's Dumka district took the extreme step yesterday and hanged herself while she was alone at home.

"My daughter told me that I go have to travel so far for a toilet in this heat, so construct a toilet first," said her mother.

She had reportedly made several requests to her parents to build a toilet at home, but they had turned her down. They told her they were instead saving the money for her marriage. They are not alone — over 92 percent of rural households in Jharkhand don't have toilets.

Ashamed that she had to go the fields instead where she lacked privacy, she decided to take her life.

India's Toilet Problem

Over 13 crore households don't have a toilet inside their homes, according to latest Census data available from 2011. A majority of them — over 11.6 crore households — that are without access to toilets are in rural areas.

This puts a large number of India's women on major health and safety risks. In neighbouring state Bihar, social activists say that most rapes take place when women go to defecate in the open.

"There are no crops now, nowhere to hide, and men can see us from all sides," said one woman to The Guardian last year. "We don't know who's watching, who's waiting for us."

Even as women battle disease and death because of lack of proper toilet facilities, prime minister Narendra Modi had promised to put half a crore toilets in the first 100 days of his tenure. In fact, he announced an ambitious plan to have toilets in every household in India by the end of his tenure in 2019.

Women have meanwhile been known to take matters in their own hands, with many brides refusing to marry if their husband's house doesn't have a toilet, or even leaving their husbands' homes after marriage if proper toilets are not constructed.

Chhota Shakeel Blames Advani For Dawood And His Decision Not To Surrender In India

$

NEW DELHI -- Dawood Ibrahim's deputy and most trusted aide Chhota Shakeel has blamed senior BJP leader LK Advani for their decision not to return to India and face trial for the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai.

"When we wanted to come back after 1993, you people, your government didn't allow. Bhai had himself spoken that time to Ram Jethmalani, that too in London... baat ho gayi thi... But your ministry... that Advani played the game," Shakeel told TOI in an exclusive interview over phone from Karachi on Friday. Advani was home minister during 1998-99 and then elevated to deputy prime minister under Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Shakeel told TOI that neither Dawood or him wants to return to India any longer.

Confirming Shakeel's claim, former law minister Ram Jethmalani said both Dawood and Shakeel had offered to surrender to Indian authorities in the 1990s, but Jethmalani blamed the Sharad Pawar-led Maharashtra government which had rejected the offer. Pawar was part of the Indian National Congress party at the time and then chief minister of Maharashtra.

Jethmalani told ANI that Dawood had told him he was not the mastermind behind the bomb blasts, and was ready to come back to face trial as long as he was not subjected to third degree torture. Jethmalani said that Dawood was not just scared that he would be beaten up, but that he would be "bumped off" in jail. "Dawood was not pleading guilty," he said.

"If they had evidence why did they (Congress) not extradite him?" said Jethmalani on Saturday. "And here was this man ready to come back. But no. (sic)"

According to Jethmalani, he and his son Mahesh, who is a senior advocate at the Bombay high court and also a BJP leader, wrote to Pawar about Dawood's demands, but the UPA government decided to reject Dawood's offer.

"I am no big fan of the UPA govt, they are utterly corrupt," said Jethmalani. "How can I say why they didn't want Dawood back. You can make the guess."

Meanwhile, Shakeel in his interview with TOI mocked Indian authorities for periodically declaring that they would bring Dawood and his aides back to India and make them face the law. "Every time a new government comes, they make the first statement about us. Usko leke aayenge... ghus ke laayenge... Kya halwa hai? Bakri ka bachcha samajh ke rakha hai kya? (We'll bring him back... Do you think Dawood is a lamb that he can be brought back?)" he said.

NEW DELHI -- Four women are the top rank holders for the Union Public Service Commission exam results that were declared here on Saturday. The topper is one Ira Singhal. Three others — Renu Raj, Nidhi Gupta and Vandana Rao — are the next in line. Suharsha Bhagat, with the fifth rank, is the top male candidate in the list.

Singhal, who is specially-abled, competed in the general category and topped the exam.

"I am really very happy. I can't believe this. I just prepared for the examination," Singhal told PTI. "I want to be an IAS officer. I want to do something for the benefit of physically-handicapped people," she said.

Singhal and Gupta are both from Delhi, and are officers with the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise). Raj is meanwhile a doctor from Kerala. This was her first attempt. "I am extremely happy to know the result. I have been preparing for the exam for the last one year," she told PTI from Thiruvananthapuram.

Meanwhile Gupta, who is presently Assistant Commissioner of Customs and Central Excise, said, "It is really a proud moment. I put in lot of hard work and finally it paid."

Around 1,236 posts will be filled from the 9.45 lakh candidates who had applied for the prestigious civil services examination. The three-stage process first saw 4.51 lakh students appearing for the preliminary examination conducted in August 24 last year across the country. While 16,933 of them qualified for the main examination held in December last year 3,308 candidates were chosen for the personality test that concluded on June 30.

This is the first time that the Commission declared the final results within four days of the closing date for the personality tests.

"In terms of the number of candidates and number of centres or sub-centres, this was the biggest examination ever conducted by the Commission," a senior official said.

Among the 1,236 candidates recommended for posting, 590 are from the general category, while 354 belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 194 from Scheduled Castes and 98 from Scheduled Tribes.

UPSC Exam Results 2014: Topper Ira Singhal Has Fought Disability To Ace India's Toughest Exam

$

NEW DELHI -- The story of Delhi resident Ira Singhal, the topper in today's civil services exam result, is nothing short of epic. The four-feet-five-inches tall woman is a towering reserve of determination and perseverance, and has battled disability and discrimination to top one of the world's most challenging exams. The acceptance rate for the Indian Administrative Service, which only the top 70 rank holders can usually hope for, can be as little as 0.025%.

"I think people will now have a different perspective when looking at girls, specially disabled girls," Singhal told ANI.

Singhal has a disability in her arms that doesn't allow her to twist her arms completely. She appeared for the exam in 2010 and got a rank of 813, but she did not get a posting because of her physical challenges. She fought and won her case in the Central Administrative Service and was finally given a posting in December last year.

She gave the test twice afterwards because she wanted to improve her rank. And on this fourth attempt, she has topped the exam, her elated father, Rajendra Singhal, told HuffPost India.

"She has some trouble with her spinal cord that doesn't let her fully twist her arms — and she is a bit short too," he said. "Even though she qualified they wouldn't give her a posting."

After fighting a four years-long legal battle with everyone from the Department of Personnel & Training, to the Revenue Ministry, UPSC, and Ministry of Social Justice & Welfare, Singhal finally got a favourable ruling in February last year. Yet, the department gave her a post only six months ago in Hyderabad.

The Delhi girl is currently an assistant commissioner in the customs & excise department of the Indian Revenue Services, but will likely move to an IAS posting soon. Given she is the exam topper in the general category, any choice of postings can be expected for her. Her father is not so sure.

"I hope she is given a proper posting this time," he said.

Singhal has earlier worked as a Spanish teacher for a year, as well as a manager in Cadbury India, and a marketing intern in beverage giant The Coca Cola Company.

She holds an MBA from Delhi University's Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), and a B.E. in computer engineering from Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT).

"My daughter has always been brilliant in academics," said her proud father. "But she always studied normally — she wouldn't spend all day studying."

"And she doesn't give up."

An investigative journalist, working with leading news channel Aaj Tak, mysteriously died today. Akshay Singh, who worked for TV Today group, was reporting on the infamous Vyapam scam, and had left for Madhya Pradesh four days ago.

The 36-year-old journalist with Aaj Tak's special investigations team had just finished interviewing the parents of a girl who had been found dead near railway tracks after her name figured in the scam. The incident took place in Meghnagar near Jhabua town.

Singh had on Saturday called on the parents of Namrata Damor, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances near railway tracks in Ujjain district.

Namrata's father Mehtab Singh Damor told PTI that Singh and two others visited their house this afternoon, where Singh apparently complained of uneasiness during the interview. After the interview was over, someone was sent to get some papers photocopied.

As Singh was waiting outside Damor's house, he suddenly started frothing at the mouth. He was rushed to civil hospital and later to a private hospital, but doctors failed to revive him. From there he was taken to another hospital in nearby Dahod in Gujarat, where he was declared brought dead. A postmortem is being conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death.

The India Today Group put out a statement on Saturday evening, saying that the cause of his sudden demise was not yet clear. "We hope that doctors and law enforcement agencies are able to establish the cause of Akshay's death," read the statement, put out by India Today's managing editor Rahul Kanwal.

Senior Congress leader and ex-Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijay SIngh tweeted that he had met the deceased journalist just a day before he left for MP.

"I warned him to be careful," tweeted the Congress leader. "I am shocked! Pay homage to him and convey condolences to his family."

Singh's Twitter bio says, "I go where truth takes me. All views my own (I mean it). Country first."

At least 25 accused/witnesses have died so far in Vyapam scam, a massive admission and recruitment racket involving several bureaucrats and politicians, and the opposition Congress has been demanding a CBI probe into the matter.

STATEMENT OF THE INDIA TODAY GROUP

The India Today Group is deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Akshay Singh. Akshay had been working with Aaj Tak as a Special Correspondent since December 2013. Akshay died in the Jhabua District of Madhya Pradesh this afternoon.

Akshay worked with the Special Investigation Team of Aaj Tak. He was an enterprising journalist who had many hard hitting investigations to his credit. He had been on an assignment in Madhya Pradesh investigating the Vyapam scam for the past four days. The cause of his sudden demise is not yet clear. We mourn the death of our valued colleague. Our thoughts and prayers are with Akshay's family. We hope that doctors and law enforcement agencies are able to establish the cause of Akshay's death.

Chhota Rajan Still In Australia, And Rival Dawood Ibrahim's Men Are Out To Kill

$

NEW DELHI: Rajendra Sadashiv Nikhalje is better known as Chhota Rajan, the gangster who was a close ally of 1993 Mumbai blast accused and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. After the blasts, Rajan quit Dawood's organisation and formed a rival group of his own and since then there has been no love lost between the two.

Dawood fled India after the blasts, and is India's most wanted man. He is said to be holed up in Pakistan, while Rajan is apparently in Australia according to intelligence sources. Both of them have tried to control their India operations through trusted deputies in Mumbai. Rajan has been the target of Dawood's 'kill' orders in the past — and was shot in Thailand in 2000 — but managed to survive. After almost five years of peace, during which Dawood's grip over the Mumbai underworld weakened because of his own absence and police crackdown on the mafia, Rajan is once again a target. Dawood has sent a team to Australia headed by his trusted lieutenant Chhota Shakeel to kill Rajan.

Rajan, who was supposed to have fled Australia after news that Shakeel's team was there, has moved cities. "He has merely moved away from Newcastle and shifted to an unidentified place in Australia. Shakeel is also aware of this fact and has not called his men back ," an officer is quoted in Times of India report. Rajan has said before that he is a Hindu and a 'patriotic' don compared with Dawood. His group killed several of Dawood's men in Mumbai, resulting in a protracted series of tit-for-tat shootings.

Rajan is in poor health and has decided to lie low. Also, getting into a firefight in Australia might jeopardize his own status and bring him to the attention of local authorities.

For Dawood, taking down Rajan would still be a victory, atleast in publicity after the group has struggled to regain its old prowess. However in an interview with the Times of India, Shakeel said this is all about settling an old enmity. Rajan had been living in South East Asia for years, before moving to Australia.

Adani Group, owned by billionaire Gautam Adani, has signed an agreeement with the Tamil Nadu government for a solar park, which would be among the largest in the world.

Adani would invest Rs 4,536 crore in the project that would involve setting up of a 648 Mega-Watt solar power plant. Construction is expected to begin in August, and completed by March 2016.

Jayalalitha's administration has decided to buy 2,000 MW of solar power in an attempt to diversify from sole reliance on coal-powered plants. That also ties in with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's national solar mission which encourages private players to set up solar plants with a goal to produce 100 Giga-watts of power by 2022. Currently, India's installed grid capacity stands at 3,744 MW. Solar power costs have plunged, making them a viable alternative to coal.

Chief minister J Jayalalithaa was present during the signing of the MoU by the two sides here on Saturday along with Rajesh Adani, the group's managing director.

Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd would purchase power from the project at Rs 7.01 a unit, a government statement said.

A court in Bihar on Saturday directed the authorities to file an first information report (FIR) against actor Sunny Deol, director Chandra Prakash Dwivedi and writer Kasinath Singh, saying their movie "Mohalla Assi" hurt religious sentiments of people.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ramchandra Prasad heard the complaint case filed by advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha, and directed the Muzaffarnagar police to file a FIR against the three people and other actors who had roles in the movie.

Ojha had filed a complaint in the court, alleging that a trailer of the movie was laced with cuss words, which maligned the image of Varanasi and its traditions and "hurts the religious sentiments of Hindus". He claimed that the movie had been leaked on the internet, and that he had seen it.

Several publications, such as FirstPost, have written about the trailer and its casual use of profanity.

The court will decide the next date for hearing the case after police registers the FIR.

Ambassadors of a few countries, including Egypt, and representatives of various Muslim countries attended the event, the organisers said. Union minister Harsh Vardhan was also present.

Hindutva organisations have been facing flak for pushing their hardline agenda with programmes like 'Ghar Wapsi' and 'Love Jihad'.

Vyapam Scam Deaths: Arun Sharma, Dean Of Jabalpur Medical College, Found Dead In Delhi Hotel

The death toll of people linked to the infamous Vyapam scam just got higher.

Arun Sharma, dean of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Medical College in Jabalpur, was found dead in his Delhi hotel room today morning. Hotel staff said that he had asked for a wake up call, but never responded to it. Later, the door was broken down and his body was found, TV reports said.

The staff of NS Medical College had been linked to the Vyapam scam, and Sharma was assisting the special task force that is investigating the huge scam, in which politicians and bureaucrats are alleged to have accepted bribes in exchange for allowing imposters to sit for recruitment examinations for government jobs and admissions to state colleges.

Dr Sharma had taken over as dean of the college two months ago. The earlier dean, DK Sakalle, was also found dead two years ago. This was tweeted by former chief minister Digvijay Singh.

Sharma's death comes just one day after the mysterious death of Akshay Singh, a journalist with Hindi news channel Aaj Tak. Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has asked a special investigating team to probe Singh's death. Over 40 people connected to the scam have died in the last six months

"The high court has not allowed Congress' request for a CBI probe earlier," Singh told reporters. He added that the Singh's death was "unfortunate and very sad." The Congress and Aam Aadmi Party have demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation, the federal investigating agency but Chouhan has not agreed. "The Supreme Court appointed SIT has been asked to probe the journalist's death," he said in a TV interview.

On Saturday, Singh, 36, had just finished interviewing the parents of Namrata Damor, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances near railway tracks in Ujjain. Her father Mehtab Singh told reporters that Singh had visited their house in the afternoon, and had interviewed him. Soon after, he suddenly froth started coming out of his mouth, and he was taken to a civil hospital, but doctors failed to revive him. From there he was taken to another hospital in nearby Dahod in Gujarat, where he was declared brought dead.

READ: Aaj Tak Reporter Covering Vyapam Scam Dies Suddenly In Madhya Pradesh

The scam is named after Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (Vyavsayik Pareeksha Mandal, or Vyapam) and dates back to 2007, when it was found that officials were rigging eligibility tests for government jobs such as police constables, teachers, bank clerks and more. Candidates are believed to have paid a total of Rs 2,000 crore as bribes over a period of 6-7 years before the scam was unearthed. Among the accused are politicians and bureaucrats, including officials in the office of Governor Ram Naresh Yadav. The police made over 2,000 arrests.

Despite the huge scale of the scandal, it had drifted out of public attention until reports came in that 47 witnesses and accused had died in the last six months, mostly in road 'accidents'. The police termed 23 of them as unnatural deaths, pointing to foul play. The investigating team is due to submit its findings to the Supreme Court on July 15.

Vyapam Scam: Whistle-Blower Claims Threats To Life As MP Govt On The Backfoot After 45 Unexplained Deaths

$
0
0
A whistle-blower who has been given police cover for life by a local court in the massive admission and recruitment scandal in Madhya Pradesh, said he faced as many as 14 threats to his life and approached officials to increase his security.

Ashish Chaturvedi, a key witness who had named top politicians in Madhya Pradesh as party to the multi-crore Vyapam scam, was given security cover by a special court in Gwalior on May 5. But after 45 unexplained deaths in the case, he told NDTV he feared for his life.

"I will be the next mysterious death," he said.

The social activist was left shaken after his personal security officer allegedly overheard a group of people saying that he would be "cut to pieces if he testified in court against MPPEB scam accused".

He called the police protection provided to him by court a "mockery of security" because a day after the order, his two security officers refused to guard him on grounds that "they cannot pillion ride on a cycle with AK-47 and an Insas rifle", the Times of India reported.

He claimed that he has even been thrashed with his security officers looking on.

Meanwhile, pressure mounted on Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday after calls for a CBI probe into the Vyapam scam. Two people — an investigative journalist reporting on the scam and a senior doctor heading part of the investigation — have died mysteriously in two consecutive days, raising the total deaths of persons connected with Vyapam to 45.

On Monday, the body of a 25-year-old trainee officer who got into the police force through an exam conducted by Vyapam was found floating in a lake. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

"No one has asked for a CBI probe except for the Congress party," said a visibly flustered Shivraj Chouhan on Monday, while addressing a press conference. "Everyone has faith in the SIT, STF, and none of the families of those who have died have asked for a CBI probe either."

Meanwhile the Supreme Court today agreed to hear a plea seeking MP governor Ram Naresh Yadav's removal. Yadav has been alleged to be involved in the scam, and his son was found dead earlier in March this year.

A bench comprising Chief Justice H L Dattu and Justices Arun Kumar Mishra and Amitava Roy said that it will hear the petition about the Vyapam scam relating to the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) along with other pleas on the issue on July 9.

The petition, filed by a group of lawyers, have sought removal of Yadav and recording of his statement in the case.

The Vyapam (an acronym for Madhya Pradesh Vyavsayik Pareeksha Mandal) scam is a massive admission and recruitment racket that surfaced in 2009, leading to the arrest of over a hundred people in 2011. Since 2012, a special task force (STF) monitored by the Madhya Pradesh high court is investigating the case, following which the involvement of several politicians and government officials has come to light. As of last month, over 2,000 people have been arrested in connection with the scam, including the state's ex-education minister Laxmikant Sharma and a hundred or so other politicians, several MPPEB officials, bureaucrats, middlemen, students, and their parents.

The STF is expected to submit their second chargesheet in the case on July 15.

Chouhan is unlikely to find support from the Centre, with the government making it clear that they would look for a "fair" probe. As the body count for the scam-related deaths went up, union minister for information and broadcasting Arun Jaitley said, "Since various issues are being raised with regard to the circumstances of his (TV journalist Akshay Singh) death, it would be important that a very fair inquiry is held so that all doubts are put to rest."

While investigative journalist Akshay Singh died on Saturday moments after he had finished interviewing the family of a woman connected with the Vyapam scam, Arun Sharma, dean of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Medical College in Jabalpur, was found dead in his Delhi hotel room on Sunday morning.

He was heading a part of the investigation into the Vyapam scam. Following his death, Indian Medical Association Jabalpur president Dr. Sudheer Trivedi too has claimed threat to his life.

Today, the body of trainee sub-inspector, Anamika Sikarwar, was found in the lake adjacent to the Police Training Academy in Sagar district headquarters, City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Gautam Solanki said. Though she had been recruited through Vyapam, she was not a suspected beneficiary of the scam.

The strike led by the students of Pune's prestigious Film And Television Institute Of India (FTII) against questionable appointments to the institute's governing council entered its 25th day on Monday. This follows an hour-long meeting between a 10-member FTII delegation and Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley that was held on Friday, where, according to The Indian Express, Jaitley hinted that the famed institute could be shut down or privatised.

The meeting was widely hoped to have led to a breakthrough in the impasse between students and the government, triggered largely by the controversial appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as chairman of the FTII governing council, who students say lacks the credentials to occupy such a position. A press note issued after this meeting by the FTII students’ association claims that Jaitley hinted that if students did not “cooperate” with the ministry, it could lead to the government washing their hands off the institute or privatising it.

Here's the exact excerpt from the press note, as reported by The Indian Express.

“When brought to the minister’s notice that an institution embodies a vision which the present society was not in a position to provide, he indicated that if students persisted in their demand for reconstitution of the society they might have to face the bleak prospect of shutdown and eventual privatisation,” the press note said.

This idea of privatisation refers to the Geetha Krishnan Report (Expenditure Reforms Commission Report), which had recommended in the late '90s that both the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata and FTII be handed over to the film industry. However, according to D Narain, director of FTII, the student association's version of events is incorrect. "The minister did not talk about privatisation or a shutdown of the institute at all. FSA [the students' association] totally misunderstood what the minister said in reference to the report of Geeta Krishnan (sic) committee in the late 90's recommending privatisation of institutions including FTII which the I&B ministry did not accept. On the contrary the ministry pumped more funds to boost the FTII," he reportedly told PTI.

However, The Economic Times has reported that the I&B Ministry is preparing a case file with arguments as to why the government should stop backing the institute, which was established in 1960. The reasons they have cited as a justification for doing so are as follows:

- A tendency of student strikes, which has resulted in 39 strikes in 55 years of the institute's existence.

- The cost of subsidised education that is funded by the government, which amounts to more than Rs 10 lakh per student. According to the report, the entire infrastructure expenditure of FTII within the five-year plan is Rs 80 crore with an annual non-plan expenditure of Rs 20 crore.

- Low recovery of costs through hostel fees, which are lower than market rates and have slipped from 25% in 2006-07 to 11% in 2010-11.

- The tendency of students to stay in the campus for an average of four to five years, even though the postgraduate diploma is supposed to take three years to complete.

As the strike continues, the future of India's oldest and most prestigious institute hangs in the balance.

Olympic medallist Mary Kom is training hard for the Rio Games next year and is determined to win another medal before she hangs up her boxing gloves for good. The 2016 Olympics will be her last competitive tournament before she quits. The five-time world champion is 32 years old and mother to three children.

"The Rio Olympics will be my last. So I would definitely like to finish on a high," she said on Sunday. "My preparations for next year are going on pretty well. In fact, it is getting better each day."

Kom said she was confident of winning another Olympic medal after her finishing third in the 2012 games.

"I would certainly want to sign off with a medal."

Explaining her decision to bow out, she said it was difficult to balance both boxing and motherhood. Her youngest child is two years old.

While Kom is not interested in turning pro, unlike boxer Vijender Singh whose recent elevation has made him ineligible to represent India in the Olympics next year, she is looking forward to training youngsters in her own academy in Imphal, in her home state in Manipur.

'Magnificent Mary'

The five-time World Amateur Boxing champion is the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each of the six world championships. In 2012, she became the only Indian woman boxer to qualify for the Summer Olympics, and won the bronze medal. She has won an Arjuna Award for boxing.

The diminutive boxer's brand value is believed to be to be in the Rs 100 crore bracket. Kom said she will be actively involved in social causes post retirement.

NEW DELHI — It says a lot about the state of women's security in India when an auto driver, who ensured that his woman passenger reached her destination safely, is being hailed as a hero in social media.

Last week, after an hour of searching for a mode of transport that would take her 38 kms from Bangalore city to Kanakpura Road, Ranjana Shanker booked an Ola Auto, late at night.

In a Facebook post, that has gone viral now, Shanker said that the auto driver, Ghasamfar Ali K, proved to be "a true gentleman" who knows how to make a woman feel safe.

Using Google Maps, Shanker asked the auto driver to take the simplest route. Although the driver followed her instructions, he also warned her that the said route would be lowly-lit and deserted. "I told Madam that the road is completely empty, so it's best to avoid it. I told her we should take the main road," Ali told HuffPost.

Shanker decided to trust the driver. 'An auto-ride in complete darkness with a stranger in a city that's not my home, with only my phone to keep me connected and provide me light,' she wrote in her Facebook post.

However, Ali assured a nervous Shanker that she will reach safely.

When they reached the destination, the auto driver asked Shanker if someone's picking her up from there as the road was empty and dark. When Shanker said that her friend will be reaching in 5 minutes, the driver asked her if he can wait till he arrives.

"I told Madam that I will wait for her friend to arrive if she doesn't have any problem with that," he said. Ali said he didn't want to leave her alone and so waited with the young woman for nearly 30 minutes before her friend arrived.

He then crossed the road with Shanker and ensured she got in safe in the friend's car.

"What overwhelmed me was not how well he did his job, but that he was a decent human being who knew that safety is a single woman traveller's biggest concern. Thank you Ghasamfar Ali. Ola, you should be proud to have him drive for you," Shanker wrote in her Facebook post.

Ali, 33, who lives with wife and his 3 year old son at JP Nagar said that he never leaves a woman passenger alone at night. "If someone wants a drop at night, I wait for the passenger to enter the house before I leave that spot," he said.

Bringing up the recent incidents where Ola drivers have allegedly harassed women passengers, he said, "The times are not safe for women. But, I'll do my best to protect them."

TORONTO — A 9-year-old girl in Canada was allowed to join a "boys only" robotics course after her petition to convince a local library went viral.

Cash Cayen from Timmins, Ontario was interested to sign up for the robotics course at the Timmins Public Library.

However, she was denied admission on the ground that she is a girl and the course is only for boys.

Cayen started an online petition on Change.org, asking people for help to convince the library to open up the robotics course to girls as well.

The petition quickly went viral and garnered more than 30,000 supporters by weekend, far exceeding the young girl's expectations, 'Tech Times' reported.

Following criticism over such gender discrimination, along with the large number of signatures the petition received, the Timmins Public Library reversed its decision.

The robotics programme is now open to all children between the ages of nine and 12 years old.

On Monday, barely days after Housing.com sacked its CEO Rahul Yadav, the real estate site appeared to be down. The page is now displaying this message. The site was briefly up before it was taken down again this afternoon.

housing dot com

The page had the cryptic message "Yes! We will solve real estate, but 10X better with The Chief Architect", beside two hastags -- #housingdown and #rahulyadav. No one has yet claimed responsibilty for hacking housing.com. The term 'chief architect' could be a reference to the Ironman-loving former CEO.

Yadav, the maverick co-founder of Housing.com, was sacked by the company last week after months of antics that reportedly upset several members on the board.

"The Housing Board, unanimously agreed to bring Yadav's tenure to a close, with reference to his behaviour towards investors, ecosystem and the media. The Board believed that his behaviour is not befitting of a CEO and is detrimental to the company..." the company said in the statement.

Ever since his sacking, the mercurial IIT Bombay drop-out had taken to Facebook to register his protest in a series of sarcastic posts, most of which are about his favourite superhero - Tony Stark or Ironman - drawing parallels with Stark's tumultous years with a company his father helped create.

A Board member who recently came onboard:"You've gone against the Values of Housing"Me: "Sir, do you really know what the Values of Housing are?"[Silence]Me: It's Ok. Let's move to the next point.
