9 Things Every MakeUp Artist Wishes You Knew

$
0
0
A makeup artist (MUA) is often, and a bit unrealistically, seen as a magician who can turn you into an alluring creature of fantasy with a touch of his or her wand... err brush. The key, however, to a successful makeover session doesn’t lie in the MUA’s pots of fairy dusts, but in their relationship with the client. “Simply cleaning your face before you come in instead of being slathered in foundation can prove to be a blessing,” say Natasha Nischol and Virgina Holmes, founders of the makeup company FAT MU. “We know you’ve put foundation, we’re going to have to remove it, and you’re not fooling anyone.”

The duo, who have worked on the sets of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ in addition to many other films and are regulars at the Lakme Fashion Week, also reveal that many Indian women hesitate to ask questions, while others tend to interfere with every stroke of the brush. “You’re a living canvas and we want you to be a masterpiece,” they say.

To be able to do that, they’ve listed certain basic rules that every client should know about and follow:

Get Real

After all, your MUA hasn’t studied magic at Hogwarts. “If you have an angry pimple, it can be covered but the bump cannot be entirely eliminated,” says Nischol. “Contouring and highlighting only goes so far, but giving us a photo and saying ‘make me look like her’ has its physical limitations.”

Embrace Your Eyebrows

Indian women have beautiful dark brows, which is a coveted thing. “Many women here want to thin them out to nothing or draw them in like Groucho Marx,” says Nischol. “Brows frame your face, and a good makeup artist will want to make them look as natural as possible.”

It’s Time To Stop Being Fair

Too much foundation in an attempt to look fairer will end up making you look grey or haggard. “It’s better to embrace your features and enhance them,” says Holmes. “Love who you are.”

Silence Is Beautiful…

It’s fun to chat with your make-up artist and communicate about what you want. But it can get frustrating for someone who’s trying to create a clean line or an intricate do while your face is moving. On that note, put your phone away.

…But So Is Effective Communication

Inform your makeup artist about any skin allergies you may have. Also, let them know if you’re not happy about something once they’re finished. A good make-up artist appreciates feedback, as long as it is delivered politely.

Lay Off The Powder

“Indian women LOVE powder foundation, especially M.A.C Studio Fix. Here’s the thing though, it is not setting powder,” says Holmes. “Don’t douse it on top of your foundation because it will cake it up. And if you have dry skin, stay away completely!”

Retire The Kajal

Holmes feels that there has been a saturation of smoky eyes and kajal in India. Don’t get stuck in a rut, it’s boring to do the same look over and over again when there are so many new things to try.

Come Clean

Bad breath or body odour can be extremely off-putting when someone has to spend 4-6 hours in such close proximity to you. Make it pleasant for your makeup artist and carry some chewing gum or deodorant along if you’ve been out in the heat and come in fresh.

It’s Not Always A ‘Match’ Made In Heaven

Indian weddings are colourful, which makes bridal makeup so much fun! “But a bright pink lehenga doesn’t always require the same shade of lipstick or nail paint,’ says Holmes. “Matchymatchy is not trendy. Instead let some contrasting makeup make its own statement.”

Bargaining Is Best Left Behind In Sarojini Nagar

“It’s frustrating when people try to get freebies or bargain till the last rupee,” says Nischol. “Products are expensive, and we spend all day on our feet. But more importantly, every makeup artist considers his or her work a form of art. And it’s worth paying for.”

Don’t Nitpick

Congratulations if you’re at the top of the make-up trend game. And it’s okay to be clear about what you want, but scrutinising every brush and stroke of your makeup artist will make them want to paint your face to look like Boko the clown.

Here's Rajinikanth And Kamal Haasan's 'Secret Pact' That You Knew Nothing About

$

Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth are two of the Indian film industry's most successful actors whose individual stardom commands a humongous fan following.

Imagine the collective frenzy if the two megastars were to come together for a movie? No, it is not that they have never acted together, but they did so in the late 70s when their following wasn't as meta as it subsequently became.

A recent collaboration hasn't happened and there's a good reason for that. Turns out, Haasan and Rajinikanth are just like any other BFFs, with secret pacts and bro codes and as such.

There was a good chance that the two heavyweights will star opposite one another in Shankar's sequel to Robot(2010), but Haasan turned down the offer. The role was that of the film's antagonist, a part that is now being essayed by Akshay Kumar.

In an interview published by Rediff.com, Haasan spoke about the reasons for turning down the role and revealed that the main cause is a 'secret pact' between them.

He said, "Rajniji and I have a pact that, whenever we do another film together, it would have to be produced by either me or him. It's the only way to ensure we do not displease our fans."

He also added, "There was no question of taking up the part. I wouldn't have been part of this film under any circumstance and it's got nothing to do with the role being a negative one. I have played negative roles many times before. Besides, a big star (Akshay Kumar) is playing the part now."

In a previous interview to Sify.com, Haasan had also stated that one of the reasons why the duo hasn't collaborated often is because it's not fiscally viable.

"If both of us are paid our remuneration, then where is the money to make the film a viable project? Why should you increase the film’s cost and make it a risky proposition?" he had said.

"Maybe both of us could come together for a guest appearance in a film if fans want to see us together. Why should we reduce our salary? If it’s for fans like I said earlier, I’m open to guest appearances but there is no necessity for us to act together in a full-fledged film," the Vishwaroopam actor insisted.

A post in China's regulatory agency TENAA also leaked many of the specifications of the upcoming smartphone. OnePlus 3 will feature a metal body and an HTC like design. It will have a 5.5-inch full HD screen, and will run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor.

There is uncertainty around some specifications. The phone may have a 4GB or 6GB RAM. The TENAA post suggested a 3500 mAh battery but in an earlier leak, Evan Blass on twitter suggested that battery will have 3000 mAh capacity. The phone will have NFC connectivity and 16 MP rear camera.

According to the reports and company officials, OnePlus is looking to ditch the invite system of sales altogether after facing a backlash over availability.

Nirbhaya Fund Is Not Enough, Need National Compensation Policy For Rape Survivors: SC

$

0
NEW DELHI--The Supreme Court today asked the Centre to formulate a national policy for providing adequate relief to rape survivors. The apex court bench also pointed out that setting up a separate fund like the 'Nirbhaya fund' was not enough and amounted to "just a lip service".

"Different states have different schemes. There is no national plan as how the rape victims are to be compensated. Setting up of the Nirbhaya Fund is not enough and it is just paying a lip service. The Union of India must ensure that adequate relief is being provided to the victims of sexual offences," a vacation bench of Justices P C Pant and D Y Chandrachud said.

The bench also issued notice to the Centre, all states and Union Territories and sought their responses on the effective implementation of Section 357(A) of the CrPC and status of victim compensation schemes, along-with the number of victims of rape who have been compensated.

During the hearing on a batch of petitions, senior advocate Indira Jaising, who is assisting the court as an amicus curiae, said that the implementation of the "Victim Compensation Scheme" is a matter of concern as only 25, out of 29 states, have notified the scheme.

"There is complete lack of uniformity in the said schemes and the States have not yet indicated whether appropriate funds have been allocated in pursuance to the notification of the said schemes, as well as the number of rape victims that have been compensated under the said schemes," she said adding that some states pay Rs 10 lakh as compensation while few others pay as less as Rs 50,000 to such survivors.

The bench, while prima facie agreeing to the plea that there was lack of uniformity in such schemes, said that there are some states, which even provide compensation to victims of sexual offences just on registration of the FIRs.

"Some states even provide interim compensation to sexual offence victims of particular class just on registration of FIR. Delhi has different scheme, UP has different. There has to be some national model on this," the bench observed.

Six petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court between 2012-2013 after the Nirbhaya gangrape in Delhi on December 16, 2012 raising various concerns on safety and security of women.

All the petitions were tagged by the apex court and several directions have been passed from time to time in this regard.

Senior advocate Indira Jaising said Delhi's scheme of victim compensation is a model scheme which could be replicated in other states also.

"There is no provision of interim compensation while in scheme being implemented in Delhi has a provision to do so. It is a model scheme which could be replicated in other states also," she said.

The senior advocate who was appointed amicus curiae in the case last year said that it was suggested by various petitioners that a national register for sexual offenders should be maintained but in her point of view it was not desirable as it will affect the right of privacy.

She said that there were some suggestions in various petitions which needs to be referred to law commission for further study comparing with the practices in other countries.

Jaising also sought implementation of Witness Protection Program Schemes saying that in most of the rape case the acquittal rate is very high.

"The rate of acquittal in rape cases is very high. It is due to for two reasons one is witnesses turning hostile and the second is delay in trial due to which witnesses looses their interest in cases. There is urgent need to have a witness protection scheme like it is in Delhi to protect the witnesses," she said.

Jaising also raised concerns on various other issues like setting up of one stop crisis centres in every district for rape survivors saying only 14 districts out of 653 disricts have so far complied with the scheme.

She also highlighted lack of data on the buses plying on All India Tourist Vehicle Permits and absence of regulations on vehicles plying with tinted glass.

To this the bench said some laws and regulations have been framed under which the issue of tinted glass has been taken care of.

Jaising also raised the issue of regulation of radio taxi operators and web based taxi aggregator companies, saying that there is inadequate data available as how these services are being regulated in most states.

"This is of utmost important since many women use these taxi services and there have been repeated reports of molestation and instances of sexual assault by drivers employed by these companies.

Five Things That Are Wrong With Indian Banks, According To The Reserve Bank

$
0
0
The quality of service offered by Indian banks to its customers is rather lackadaisical. This is the inference you can draw from a recent speech by the deputy governor of the country's central bank, the Reserve Bank of India. SS Mundra, the deputy governor, spelt out five areas that need urgent improvement.

1. Customer complaints about transactional fraud and identity theft such as unauthorized fund transfers, fraudulent withdrawals from ATMs using fake cards, and instances of phishing, have increased “manifold”. Mundra felt that it is critical for banks to address such financial fraud to shore up customer confidence, while educating customers on the dangers of potential fraud. He added that the RBI is examining additional regulation to limit the liability of customers on card-related and electronic transfer fraud.

2. A survey of almost 4,000 ATMs across the country revealed that about one third of the ATMs were not working. ATMs were also found to be in violation of regulations on display material and facilities for differently-abled people.

3. There have been an increasingly large number of cases of misleading and “mis-selling” of third party products, specially insurance products, which are often sold to customers bundled along with loans. Mundra cited a recent incident that involved a senior citizen being sold an investment scheme promising a tax-free 11% return. However, upon a visit from another banking representative who prompted the citizen to prematurely close fixed deposits worth Rs7 lakh and invest in the same scheme, the individual ended up earning only 3.5% return instead of the promised 11%.

4. Many banks were also violating RBI guidelines that prohibit the imposition of extra charges on the non-maintenance of minimum balance in a savings bank account, leading to instances of negative balance in these accounts.

5. The status of the implementation of customer service codes set by banking practices watchdog Banking Codes and Standards Board of India (BCSBI) a decade ago remains “far from satisfactory”. There have been several instances of “flagrant violations” of the code, evident not just from the numerous complaints received by banking ombudsman offices but also through customer interactions.

Mundra was addressing a conference organized by BCSBI in Mumbai.

Lenovo-owned Motorola is targeting the premium segment of mobile users with a new series of phones in the Moto Z series, that will sport a new design as well as attachable modules. This follows the launch earlier this year of LG's flagship phone LG G5 that comes with attachable modules for different functions.

Many details of the Moto Z series phones and modules have been leaked online. The phones will have a body that is just 5.2 mm thick and will come with functional modules, features that are obviously aimed at high-end users, unlike the more mass market Moto X line.

Rumoured specs for the phone indicate that it will have a 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, and 4 GB RAM. The phone will have a 13 MP rear camera with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and a 2600 mAh battery, with an internal storage capacity that is tipped to be at 32 GB.

Another variant of the phone, called Vector, is also tipped to be launched soon. Vector will be shipped with a 1080p screen and a Snapdragon 615 processor.

moto z

The pins on the back of the Moto Z phones suggest that the modules will be attached as back-plates or cases. This would be different from LG G5's bottom module design. Evan Blass of Venturebeat has leaked a picture of the modules as well. One of them looks like a camera module with LED flash and rubber grip, whereas the other modules could be a stereo speaker and a pico projector.

The Indian launch date of the Moto Z series has not been specified yet but it is likely that phone will be launched here a couple of weeks after the global launch. The company recently released Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus in India.

Pinarayi Vijayan Allegedly Once Asked His Party Members To 'Add Salt To Dead Bodies'

CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan was sworn in as the Kerala Chief Minister last Wednesday and in this approving piece for Huffington Post, G. Pramod Kumar has said that Vijayan has begun well. Regular prime-time TV commentators too were unanimous in their opinion that Pinarayi’s team is the cleanest one could have hoped for.

But revelations about comments, allegedly made by Vijayan in the past, might take away from the current aura of goodwill around Vijayan.

According to a report in Deccan Chronicle, Congress MLA A.P. Abdullakutty in an article in the party mouthpiece ‘Veekshanam’ on Wednesday levelled serious charges on Vijayan. In the article Abdullakutty says that, while addressing a meeting in 2008 after five people were killed in CPM-BJP clashes in Kannur, Vijayan reportedly said," We should learn from Bengalis. They do it without shedding even a drop of blood. They kidnap people, bury their bodies in deep pit along with a sack of salt. The world never comes to know about the blood, photographs or the news about such killings.’’

Vijayan dismissed Abdullakutty's claims as baseless. “But there has never been an instance where I had to cite the experience of another region to evaluate the conditions here," he said on Wednesday. "That situation has never happened.’’

Without naming Abdullakutty, he added, “But the person who is saying all this now has never been part of any such situation at any stage. That’s all I can say at the moment.’’

Is VS Achuthanandan A Political Monk Who Asks For Perks On The Side?

$

0

A big possible worry for the CPM and its supporters post the spectacular Left victory in Kerala had been the choice of the Chief Minister. VS Achuthanandan had won the hearts of the people and Pinarayi Vijayan, that of the party and its network. A choice in favour of either of them could have been real trouble.

But nothing happened when the state and central leaderships threw their weight behind Pinarayi. Party General Secretary Sitaram Yechury had apparently taken the veteran leader into confidence before making the announcement, and all that one could see was an expressionless Achuthanandan.

In the next couple of days, he appeared to have been sulking and many thought he might go off the tangent yet again when he made some cryptic Facebook posts and tweets. But somehow he stayed in line and the party averted a possible crisis.

In the eyes of his supporters and the LDF camp, his stock rose again when he said he didn't care for positions of importance or power. He said his commitment was to people and that he would be their watchdog. Sceptics thought he was posturing while the opposition made fun of the CPM for dumping him after exploiting his popularity in the elections.

vs achuthanandan
VS Achuthanandan with Prakash Karat.

But on Thursday, a cheeky little investigation published by Malayala Manorama newspaper tore into Achuthanandan’s veneer of abnegation. The report carried a photo of him and Yechury looking at a piece of paper, at the swearing in ceremony of Pinarayi Vijayan, in which the titles of some official posts were allegedly scribbled. The posts were advisor to the government with cabinet rank and LDF chairman. The scribbling also included a return to the party’s state secretariat.

The veteran leader’s supporters were happy that he would soon be rewarded with a commensurate position even if it meant of being kicked upstairs.

The message that report sought to convey was that Yechury had given him the note and those positions were the party’s proposals to appease him in lieu of his acceptance of Pinarayi’s Chief Ministership. This surmise was justified by Yechury’s announcement earlier that Achuthanandan would be given his due.

The veteran leader’s supporters were happy that he would soon be rewarded with a commensurate position even if it meant of being kicked upstairs. The ensuing debate was only on one possibility - if he would accept it or not, given that he had stated his disinterest in power and his preference to be a watchdog.

vs achuthanandan
With Narendra Modi.

But the real shocker came later on Thursday when Yechury told reporters in Delhi that they were not his proposals, but Achuthanandan’s. Not in as many words, but he did say that the note was given to him by the latter. Reportedly, somebody from Achuthanandan’s personal staff gave it to him at the swearing in ceremony and he handed it over to Yechury after reading its contents.

So, the cat was out of the bag. The only cover-up that his supporters could attempt now was to deflect the blame to his son, who could have written the note, and his personal staff.

For a 92-year old man, one of the founders of the CPM and a bonafide revolutionary in his young age, who had dedicated his entire life to politics, this is no big deal.

This episode certainly lowered Achuthanandan’s credibility and his stated renunciation of power in favour of selfless service of people. In fact, if the contents of the note were true, it showed another side of the veteran, that many of his critics had been trying to publicise - that he couldn't live without power and its entitlements.

The post of an advisor with cabinet rank means entitlements of a minister: a palatial official residence like the one he presently lives in, at least 25 staff members (earlier it was 30, but Pinarayi wants ministers to reduce it by five), official vehicles, good salary, and all the other perks official privileges for him and his family. In other words, continuing with the entitlements that he enjoyed in the last five years as the opposition leader in the state assembly.

kerala left front

For a 92-year old man, one of the founders of the CPM and a bonafide revolutionary in his young age, who had dedicated his entire life to politics, this is no big deal. But asking for them on the sly, after publicly renouncing them, reeked of duplicity. It would have been perfectly fine with anybody else in the state, but not him. He has been a Demi God who could do no wrong.

Did he fall in the eyes of the people? Probably yes, because all these years he sought to represent their conscience and spoke for them. He was spotless and never compromised with the tricks of realpolitik. He was tough, intransigent and tireless. Probably the only leader after Communist veteran EMS Namboodiripad who the state, cutting across the barriers of class, caste and religion, believed in.

One could only speculate on what could have prompted Achuthanandan to ask for those perks. Probably, he needs some comforts, that he’s used to, in his old age besides the support of his staff.

One could only speculate on what could have prompted Achuthanandan to ask for those perks. Probably, he needs some comforts, that he’s used to, in his old age besides the support of his staff. His range of political work does call for an institutional infrastructure, particularly because of his old age; but he could have been discreet or straightforward. Probably, he was discreet indeed until Malayala Manorama peeped into his note through its long lens.

It doesn’t matter if Pinarayi benefits from this disgraceful episode or not because he has reached his pinnacle and Achuthanandan doesn't matter for him any more. The equations in the party have changed and the purported past duel between them is of no consequence. In fact, more than gaining from it, the party may be smarting under a possible embarrassment given that all is well now.

The only way to get out of this is to give the veteran what he is asking for and close the story. Pinarayi might not have a problem, provided the veteran doesn’t become a thorn in his flesh yet again.

'Even Africa Isn't Safe,' Says Union Minister Mahesh Sharma In Response To Congolese Man's Killing

Last week, a 23-year-old Congolese national was allegedly beaten to death by a group of men in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area. While African diplomats in India protested against racist attacks on their citizens in India, Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma had a strange response to the killing.

On Friday, Sharma said that the killing of the Congolese man was unfortunate, but then went on to add that "even Africa is not safe".

The tourism and culture minister said that he has experienced first-hand how unsafe Africa could be.

"India is a large country and such incidents will give a bad name to India. It is an unfortunate incident. However, even Africa is not safe," Sharma said in an interview.

He recalled how he had to miss his morning and evening walks during a visit to South Africa because of safety concerns, adding that it is unfair to paint India as an unsafe country.

"When I went to South Africa, I was stopped from going for a morning walk at 6 am by the hotel people citing security reasons. My post dinner walk was also dropped for the same reasons. It's not fair to say that India is unsafe," said the minister.

Masunda Kitada Oliver, the victim in last week’s attack, was a graduate student who had lived in India for over six years, according to the Congolese embassy in New Delhi.

He had hailed an auto rickshaw on Friday night when three men insisted they had already hired the vehicle. The men beat him up and hit him on the head with a stone, and he died later that night, the police said.

Two of the suspected attackers have been arrested, while police are still looking for the third.

The African Heads of Mission in New Delhi issued a statement on Tuesday urging the Indian government to address the problem of “racism and Afro-phobia” in the country.

In the statement, they said, “Given the pervading climate of fear and insecurity in Delhi, the African Heads of Mission are left with little option than to consider recommending to their governments not to send new students to India, unless and until their safety can be guaranteed."

In response, India has promised quick punishment. “We will ensure that justice is done and stringent punishment given to those involved in the attack,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the external affairs ministry said on Thursday, that some people of Indian origin in Congo were injured after their shops were attacked, possibly as a reaction to the murder of the Congolese student in Delhi.

“Our embassy in Congo is in touch with local authorities and, as of now, things have calmed down. India’s relations with Congo go back many years,” the MEA said.

Fardeen Khan Hits Back At Those Trolling Him For His Weight Gain With A Long Letter

After Adnan Sami, Parineeti Chopra, Sonakshi Sinha, and Arpita Khan, Fardeen Khan recently became the victim of social media trolls, who started mocking him for having put on weight.

Just like Arpita, who recently shut down a troll with an Instagram post recently, Fardeen decided to write a long letter on Facebook, hitting back at everyone who were weighing in with their opinions on his recently acquired plumpness.

The attacks began a few days ago when a photo of the actor looking visibly heavier than we remember him being surfaced on social media. Once known for his hunky looks, Feroz Khan's son became the butt of body-shaming jokes.

Soon, a barrage of tweets attacking him made their way to his handle.

Khan found a supporter in singer Adnan Sami, who has gone through the ordeal himself, and was applauded for his drastic weight loss. The singer tweeted what everybody else should really have, instead of making silly jokes on Khan.

After the fat shaming, Khan finally took to Facebook to hit back at those belittling him for something as common and normal as gaining weight. He wrote,

"HAPPY TO HAVE BEEN THE WEEKENDS ENTERTAINMENT FOR ALL YOU TROLLERS. IF YOU HAVE HAD ENOUGH FUN PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK AT YOUR OWN REFLECTION. IF TROLLING IS WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL BETETR ABOUT YOURSELF, YOU HAVE TO SERIOUSLY THINK ANOUT YOU FUTURE PROSPECTS. MY BEST WISHES." (sic)

And further added,

".I AM SURE YOU ALL HAD A FEW LAUGHS AT MY EXPENSE TOO…I MUST CONFESS I DID TOO….THERE IS A SAYING " BLESSED IS HE WHO CAN LAUGH AT HIMSELF FOR HE SHALL NEVER CEASED TO BE AMUSED" MORE IMPORTANTLY, I BELIEVE THE RIGHT TO LAUGH AT ANOTHER IS EARNED BY HAVING THE COURAGE TO LAUGH AT YOURSELF. BESIDES LIFE IS TOO SHORT AND WOULD MAKE OUR EXISTENCE UNBEARABLY DULL AND SERIOUS IF WE DIDNT.." (sic)

16-Year-Old Boy Beaten, Stripped, Brutalised In New Delhi, Four Arrested

NEW DELHI -- The 16-year-old boy, who was beaten, stripped and brutalised allegedly by a group of intoxicated men in southwest Delhi's Inderpuri area, on Thursday, demanded the arrest of main culprit after the Delhi police arrested four people in this regard.

"Four people attacked and assaulted me and all of them have been arrested, but Sunny is absconding, he should be nabbed because he is the main convict. He still keeps coming in the colony," the victim told the reporters.

"Sunny told me to stop and sit on a scooty, which I wasn't aware was a stolen one. The number plate of the scooty was broken," he added.

In a shocking video that went viral, the victim is seen begging and screaming as he is stripped and tortured with a beer bottle. His hands and legs were tied and he was thrashed.

"They told me to bring beer and when I refused to do so, they tied my hand and legs and made me sit on the beer bottle. I wasn't aware that they have made a video. I told my mother that they have shot my video," victim told reporters.

The victim also said, that after he was thrashed, he had gone to the nearby railway tracks to commit suicide.

"They rubbed chilly on my private parts, and attacked me with blades. They kept thrashing me but no one came to the rescue. They shut me up in an office and didn't tell my parents where I was," he added.

The assault on Monday was reported only two days later. The boy's family said the victim did not return for a long time after the attack and tried to kill himself.

"My son went to play and there was a scooty which was stolen from someone, he wasn't aware of this. He was badly beaten by a group of people. He was so ashamed of the video tape that he also attempted to commit suicide," victim's father said.

The police said the teen was forced to walk naked in the colony for a while but added that the video is yet to be verified.

The police have filed cases of assault and wrongful confinement against the attackers.

The All IITs Placement Committee plans to meet next week to come up with a detailed plan that could put “onerous” conditions on start-ups looking to hire students from the IITs, according to the report by Arundathi Ramanathan. Other startups are also planning to delay the joining dates of their campus hires, which could end up having an impact on over 150 students at the IITs.

Flipkart has attributed the delay to the company’s current corporate restructuring that involves consolidation of business units along with launching new business units. In a lengthy blog post addressing the delay, Flipkart said it will launch an improved campus program in December, and promised to pay an additional joining bonus of ₹1.5 lakh to all campus recruits.

"Future engagement of Flipkart with B-school campuses is bound to get affected as a relationship based on mistrust and lack of transparency can never be mutually beneficial," read a recent e-mail sent by IIM-Ahmedabad to Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal and human resources head Nitin Sethi, according to media reports. "Rude shocks due to unilateral decision making does little to help strengthen relationships with the campus."

The IITs also plan to educate students on the “risk of joining startups” and encourage hiring by companies at the end of the financial year, by when they have a better idea of their financial health.

The funding spree that Indian startups saw in 2015 has slowed down in recent months, with many venture capital and private equity investors tightening their belts. According to data by CB Insights and KPMG’s Venture Pulse 2015 report, deals slipped by four percent while funding fell by 24 percent as VC-backed startups raised US$1.2 billion on 116 deals.

We say, startup life was never an easy road.

7 Yummy Tricks To Sneak Almonds Into Your Food Every Day

They are the perfect snack, but people often give almonds a miss even though they are packed with wholesome nutritious goodness. “They are a source of 15 nutrients including vitamin E, dietary fibre, and protein,” says Dr Ritika Sammadar, regional head, dietetics, Max Healthcare. An almond – or rather 30 grams of almonds – a day will keep many things at bay including cholesterol, weight gain and high blood sugar.

It’s not exactly hard to grab and munch on a few almonds everyday, but it is an activity that tends to be largely ignored for other more delectable but nutritionally deficient options. There are however ways to sneak this power-packed item into your daily diet:
the Indian representatives from the Almond Board of California have shared seven ways that will not only ensure that you are getting your dosage of good fats every day, but also add a flavourful twist to your meals and snacks.

1. Toss a few slivered almonds to your salads and sprouts for that extra crunch.

2. Top your yoghurt/curd with diced almonds to round off your meal.

almond yogurt

3. Sprinkle finely chopped almonds atop poha or upma for a nutritious snack! Or incorporate it into the recipe itself, like Kalyani Balaji, author of blogspot kitchenkathukutty has done.

4. Almond chutney makes for a yummy and healthier substitute to coconut chutney, and pairs very well with dosa, idlis and other chutneys. Follow simpleindianrecipe's version to get your hands on some. Alternately, you could also try incorporating your badaam in some dips such as these ones by Kathy Patalsky: they'll complement spicy or sweet flavours.

5. Skip the heavily sweetened haldi milk at night, instead add almonds to your low-fat, morning smoothie. Pair with some yummy mango in the summers, and ccarrot in the winters.

6. Tomato, mushroom and sweet corn soups are passé. Have you tried almond soup, Tarla Dalal or Sanjeev Kapoor style?

7. Stop buying almond butter. Just buy some almonds and grab a food processor. You'll also need to invest in some patience, but it's worth it if you think about the number of calories you're saving on.

India's smartphone shipment crossed 100 million units last year, placing it in the second spot globally after China. India beat the US for the second spot. A large chunk of these 100 million smartphones were made by Chinese phone manufacturers.

4. Gionee

Gionee has earned a name by developing very thin and flashy mobiles. At one point, with a thickness of 5.5 mm, Gionee Elife S5 was the slimmest smartphone available. Since then, the company has come up with a range of mobiles in China and India. It now sells feature phones starting from ₹1000 to smartphones costing ₹35000

5. Haier

Haier has been present in India for a long time but as an appliances maker. Recently, they have ventured into the Indian market with phones. But instead of taking the plunge into the ever growing smartphone market, they are concentrating on selling feature phones. They do have some low-end smartphone but none of them have any standout features.

6. Huawei

Huawei has been a leader in selling networking solutions in India. And, they have produced some good smartphones in recent years. Their sub-brand Honor has been received very well in India. Huawei sells smartphones of a different range under Ascend and Mate series as well. Notably, the company partnered with Google to manufacture Nexus 6P which has been lauded by critics and consumers alike.

7. Konka

This relatively unknown brand is almost nonexistent in India. They still sell one or two outdated phones on a few portals.

8. Lenovo

Before Lenovo jumped into the smartphone business, they sold millions of PCs and laptops in India. The company began selling Android phones in 2012. Lenovo's Vibe series and K3 Note series have been fairly popular in India in recent times. Their sales have been boosted by the fact that they acquired Motorola Mobility from Google whose Moto G and Moto E are quite popular in India.

9. Letv

A very popular company in China launched in India under the name LeEco. They initially launched two devices, LeEco 1S and LeEco Max. Recently they also released their new phones LeEco Le2, LeEco Max 2 and Le 2 Pro in China, and these will be launched in India on 3 May.

11. OnePlus

OnePlus was an instant hit in India when it arrived in 2014. They launched their first phone OnePlus One on invite basis and received an enthusiastic response. A lot of people were attracted to high-end specs at a mid-range price. With the invites becoming hard to get, they have now done away with the system. In 2015, they launched two phones, OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X, both available on the invite system initially and later in an open sale.

12. Oppo

13. QiKU

qiku

14.Vivo

Vivo, unlike others, is relying on an offline model more than on online sales. They have more than 10000 partner stores in India. They also have one of the slimmest phones right now in the form of X5 Max which is 4.75 mm in thickness. The company is also sponsoring the Indian Premier League this year. They recently launched two new phones to mark the occasion.

vivo

15. Vsun
Vsun is another phone maker which is not recognized much and has just one phone available in few of the portals.

16. Xiaomi
Xiaomi rules the Indian market in popularity if we discount the Motorola factor of Lenovo. The products of the company are extremely sought after in India. From their Mi series to Note series and power banks to headphones everything is in demand in the country. But the biggest complaint from the customers is the flash sales strategy. Consumers have to log in at a certain time to get a chance of buying a phone. And a lot of the flash sales are over in a few seconds.

xiaomi logo

17. Zopo Mobile

Zopo sells 3 series of phone in India. Most notable of them is the speed series which has decacore processors. They are metal phones with high-end specs. The other two series are Flash series and color series.

zopo

18. ZTE

Zhongxing Telecommunication Equipment is the fourth largest phone manufacturer in the world. Although in India it is not that popular. ZTE still offers a lot of phones in India including blade series which is their prominent offering. They also make tablets and feature phones.

zte

19. ZUK Mobile

This is a sub-brand under Lenovo. Right now they only have one offering in Zuk Z1 which is a low-cost Android phone.

Chinese phones have created the cult of their own in the Indian market. There are plenty of reasons behind it including saturation in the Chinese market. In the last quarter of the last year, shipment from Chinese manufacturers rose 71 percent.

These phone makers are trying to set up manufacturing plants in India as well to participate in "Make In India" scheme of government. While companies like Xiaomi wants to open their exclusive stores in the country. It will be interesting to see how Indian smartphone makers would respond to this.

IAS officer Ajay Singh Gangwar and Barwani district Collector, who praised the country's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in a Facebook post, was transferred by Madhya Pradesh government tonight.

Gangwar was transferred as Deputy Secretary in the Secretariat in Bhopal.

"The state government has transferred Barwani Collector Gangwar as Deputy Secretary in the Mantralaya in Bhopal," a state Public Relation department official said.

In the Facebook post written in Hindi, which has gone viral on other social media platforms, Gangwar has written that "let me know the mistakes that Nehru should not have committed... Is it his mistake that he prevented all of us from becoming Hindu Talibani Rashtra in 1947? Is it his mistake to open IIT, ISRO, BARC, IISB, IIM, BHEL steel plant, dams, thermal power? Is it his mistake that he honoured Sarabhai, Homi Jehangir in place of intellectuals like Asaram and Ramdev?"

According to the government official, the FB post had not gone down well with the top officials as it was in "violation" of the service rules, following which an initial probe was conducted and Gangwar was transferred.

Ever since the Facebook post had gone viral, there were talks that Gangwar could be shunted out of the district any time. However, his transfer order did not mention anything about his Facebook post on Nehru, the official added.

Buying A Drone? You Need A License To Fly It

$

0
Thinking of buying a drone, or already own one? Then you need to get a license and permission from Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA). A draft bill a draft bill released by DGCA spells out the proposed policy to legalize the use of drones. Work on the bill began In April, the organization started working on framing the policy to legalize the usage of the drones. Here are some of the salient points from the policy.

1. Owning a drone

For owning a drone you would need to get a unique identification number (UID) from DGCA. For the registration, you would need to provide proof of address, a permit from the police and one from the telecommunication department. You will need to give the specifications of the drone to the authorities. After all the documents are cleared you have to install a fire-proof plate over the panel that has the UID.

2. To fly the drone

If you want to fly a drone above 200 feet you have to take permission from DGCA. But if you have a recreational drone which flies below 200 feet you have to take permission from the local administration. Even educational institutes will have to take permission for any drone-related activities.

3. How to obtain a license?

Your Unmanned Aircraft Operator Permit (UAOP) has to go through a set of procedures. The following documents have to be submitted to the authorities 90 days before flying.

– Permission from either a civil or defense Air Navigation Service (ANS) provider
– Permission of the land or property owner to take off and land Unmanned Aircraft
– Details of remote piloting and training records
– Third party accidental insurance (if applicable)
– Security clearance from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security of India

The license will be valid for two years. So even if you want to own a small recreational drone just to fly in your house, you need to go through all this procedure. There is no clear guideline if there would be an online portal dedicated for the purpose.

4. Classification of the drones

-Mirco: Less than 2 kg
-Mini: Greater than 2 kg and less than 20 kg
-Small: Greater than 20 kg and less than 150 kg
-Large: Greater than 150 kg

As pointed out by medianama, the permission has to be taken, regardless of the size based on the flying condition.

5. Security and Flying conditions

For security purposes, the owner can't transfer the drone to someone else without taking prior permission of DGCA. So you can't lend your drone to a friend who wants to experiment with it as his flying space might not be approved by the authorities.

For all the flights above 200 feet, the authorities have to be informed of the flight plan. If the event is canceled you have to inform them about that too. For micro drones, you have to fly them under 500 meter of the visual line of sight.

Additionally, you can even drop substances without prior permission which would mean that something like Amazon's drone delivery won't work. You would also need to get the drone insured.

6. Pilot qualifications

Drones are generally objects which can be flown by anyone, even children. But according to the bill you need to be at least 18 to fly a drone. Apart from that, you need to take special ground training equivalent to that undertaken by aircrew of manned aircraft or a private pilot’s license holder.

mi drone

Drones were largely a space and an area of interest for the enthusiast until recently. A report says that the sales of the drones have tripled in the last year. It is expected that almost 7 million drones will be sold every year by 2020. Companies like Xiaomi releasing consumer drones would also attract a lot of people to the industry. The upcoming bill will shape the future of the drones in India and in its present form the bill seems very restrictive.

Mamata Beat A Decades' Old Poll Trend, Showing Media Gets Her Appeal Wrong

$

Among the many remarkable things that Mamata Banerjee accomplished in her magnificent election win in West Bengal, one was exorcising the ‘curse of Kolkata’. This phenomenon, so far noted but not christened as such, is the defiance that voters in Calcutta have generally shown the ruling party in Bengal over the past 40 years. With a few exceptions, this has held true in elections for nearly four decades.

Banerjee’s party won all 11 seats in the city this time. It managed the same feat in 2011 as well, but that was an exceptional election, when the state voted out the Left after 34 years in power.

For nearly every election before that all the way till 1977, Kolkata cocked a snook at the party that was favoured by the people of West Bengal. In 2011, due to a delimitation exercise, the number of assembly constituencies that comprise Kolkata came down to 11. Prior to that, the city sent 21 MLAs to the assembly building.

Prior to 2016, out of 8 elections since 1977, there have only been three exceptions to the trend. The first was in 1977 itself, the next was in 1991, and the third was in 2011. Two of them were elections where the long rule of a party was being rejected across the state--the Congress in 1977 and the Left in 2011.

The Left Front came to power for the first of its seven consecutive terms in 1977. That year, the Left Front secured 16 seats out of 21, their best performance ever in Kolkata. The five other seats went to the Jan Sangh, the predecessor of the BJP. You could argue, then, that when the BJP claims this is their best performance in Bengal or that they are making inroads in the state, it is only a partial truth. The Jan Sangh had a presence before them, and indeed, Shyama Prasad Mookerjee founded the party in Kolkata.

In 1982, the first election that the Left Front faced as an incumbent government, the Comrades won 10 seats, while the Congress (I) won eleven. Right from the start of their government then, we see something of the urban disaffection creep in.

mamata banerjee

In 1987, the Left Front managed eight seats and the remaining 13 went to the Congress (I). [Disclosure: One of those 13 was won by my grandfather.)

In 1991, the Left Front won 12 of 21 seats and the Congress the remaining nine, marking the only time the incumbent Left Front government secured more than half the seats in the city. What explains the Left Front’s improved show? One reason might be the privatization of power supply in 1989 with the then RPG Group purchasing the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation Ltd .

Through the ’70s and ’80s, Calcutta was crippled by power cuts; one memorable piece of election graffiti from the 1980s showed a man fanning himself with a handheld fan and a caption that read ‘Jyoti Bane Jaala’. The reference was to the Hindi film Jyoti Bani Jwala; jaala in Bangla means annoyance and the Jyoti here is an obvious reference to the then chief minister Jyoti Basu. The coming of CESC was seen as a huge improvement in the city’s electricity supply.

In 1996, the Left Front was back in the throes of the Kolkata Curse, winning only six out of 21 seats. The Congress cleaned up the remaining 15. This is two years before the Trinamool Congress was formed, and if we look at the names of the winning MLAs, almost all of them are now Trinamool members. Clearly, it was leaders of the Congress who migrated en masse to the new party and the Trinamool reaped the support of these leaders.

mamata banerjee
Pakistan's former captain Imran Khan, left receives flowers from West Bengal state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 2016 cricket match between India and Pakistan at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, India, Saturday, March 19, 2016.

In 2001, the Left Front scored eight out of 21. The Trinamool won eleven constituencies and the Congress two. What is worth noting is that the Trinamool was only a three-year-old party then, this was in fact the first Assembly election the party contested.

The Left Front managed eight out of 21 seats in 2006 again. The Trinamool won nine, the Congress three and the Rashtriya Janata Dal one. Post 2006, the decision of the delimitation commission to reshape constituencies was implemented. Calcutta and Bombay were the only two cities that shed constituencies. This is because delimitation was meant to reflect equitable representation of the population, and a large part of Kolkata's population has resettled in suburban areas.

From the 2011 election onward, Kolkata has 11 eleven Assembly constituencies. In 2011 and 2016, the Trinamool scored all eleven.

What do these numbers mean, other than upending an election pattern? Two things, actually. The first is that Trinamool is evidently strong on urban governance, and not only a party of rural appeal as is (often dismissively) made out in the English-language media. First, that despite Mamata Banerjee’s much-talked-about rural focus and appeal, she is strong on urban governance.

Second, there are two Kolkatas. There is the Kolkata of English media and Ananda Bazaar Patrika consumers--in other words, the upper middle class and aspiring middle class consumers. And there is the Kolkata of the rest.

There are two Kolkatas. There is the Kolkata of English media and Ananda Bazaar Patrika consumers--in other words, the upper middle class and aspiring middle class consumers. And there is the Kolkata of the rest.

The war between Banerjee and the leading media house in the East, the Ananda Bazaar Patrika group, came to a boil this election season.

The Trinamool’s perfect score in Kolkata, cemented by the consecutive wins, then suggests that it keeps an eye on both its urban and rural electorate. This runs counter to the English media narrative of huge urban disaffection with the populism and syndicate raaj of the Trinamool.

The Trinamool has always taken serious interest in Calcutta; you see this in their hold on the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. In the four municipality elections that have been held since 2000, the TMC has won KMC thrice.

The Trinamool has always taken serious interest in Calcutta; you see this in their hold on the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

Control on the KMC has naturally enabled the party to serve its Calcutta electorate better. The journalist Shoaib Daniyal has reported how Kolkata’s Urdu-speaking Muslim’s have switched loyalties from the Left to the Trinamool because Mamata Banerjee has solved the water problem in the slums. And these slums house three-fourths of the city’s residents. The slums are directly serviced by the Bustee Services department of the KMC.

This election, I visited some of the local ‘paara’ clubs that the Trinamool has supported with annual doles. More than anything else, these clubs serve as urban commons—a low-rent option for local residents to host wedding receptions and other family ritual ceremonies, the venue for the annual Kali and Durga Pujo, and a place for local boys and girls to play football, learn martial arts et cetera.

The mandate of this other Kolkata—the Kolkata of slums, and the Kolkata which participates in the community clubs of their localities—is enough to clinch the city for Mamata.
