Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi has launched the latest in their flagship Mi series--the Mi 5--in India, after garnering rave reviews in the Western tech press in recent weeks. The Verge called it "an alarmingly good smartphone".
The phone is priced competitively at ₹24,999 and will be available on Mi.com starting from 11am on 6 April as part of Mi Fan Festival to celebrate Xiaomi’s sixth anniversary.
Mi 5 has top-end specs with a high mid-range price point to attract consumers. The phone runs on Snapdragon 820 Qualcomm processor and has 3GB of RAM. It has 32 GB of internal storage which is not expandable. Some consumers might be unhappy with a decision of no 64 or 128 GB variant for India.

It has 5.15-inch full-HD screen and a 3,000 mAh of battery packed with it, which can be charged via Qualcomm quick charging as well. Mi 5 also has front fingerprint sensor which can be used for unlocking the phone. The flagship phone has a 16 MP camera at the back, which has a 4-axis Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) technology. It also has a front camera of 4 MP. The phone runs on MIUI based on Android Marshmallow 6.0.
The company will face tough competition from the likes of Nexus 5X and Samsung Galaxy A7. Xiaomi had launched this device on 24 February at Mobile World Congress (MWC). Xiaomi's International Vice President Hugo Barra said: "We are so excited to bring to India the most beautiful device we have unveiled so far, and only within a month of its global launch".
Recently, Xiaomi launched a lower-mid range phone Mi Note 3 at ₹9,999. Yesterday, Samsung also released a phone, Galaxy J3, which comes with a S bike mode for safe riding in the same price range. Xiaomi has been making good progress in India. They stand 7th overall in terms on market share in mobile phone shipment according to the IDC reports.
