NEW DELHI -- While the power struggle over Delhi intensifies, the Aam Aadmi Party government has put up posters asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi to let it function in the national capital.
"Prime Minister Sir, Please! Let the Delhi government work. The Delhi government is working well," the posters read.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's bigger fight is for Delhi to attain full statehood so the ruling party has control over the police, and is solely responsible for appointments of officials in the bureaucracy.
On Thursday, Kejriwal wrote a letter to Lieutenant General Najeeb Jung, who represents the centre, blaming Modi for interfering in the work of the Delhi government.
This week, Kejriwal clashed with Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi over the recent stabbing of a 19-year-old girl in Anand Parbat market, and the failure of the police to ensure women's safety in the national capital. AAP leader Dalip Pandey alleged that a Delhi police bus tried to run him over.
Kejriwal also confronted Jung after he voided the appointment of Swati Maliwal as the chief of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on the grounds that his approval was never sought by the AAP government.
In a letter to the chief minister, Jung said: “The constitutionally valid and consistent definition of ‘government’ is the ‘Lieutenant Governor of the NCT (National Capital Territory) of Delhi appointed by the President under Article 239.”
In his letter to the Lt. Governor, Kejriwal accused Jung of "blackmail."
"Prime Minister's decision to close down the Delhi Commission for Women is a very inappropriate step. Lieutenant Governor's order is that his permission should be taken on the file concerning constitution of the Women's commission. As per law and the Constitution, the issue of Women's commission is entirely beyond the jurisdiction of the L-G," he wrote in the letter.
