Catering to a burgeoning market of auto enthusiasts keen on adventure and rough terrain, Mahindra and Mahindra has launched a refurbished version of its popular off-roader, Thar. In terms of its engine and motive power, the new variant - called the Thar CRDe - barely differs from the existing Thar but is more comfortable, better-looking and thus costlier at Rs ₹ 8.03 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai).

“Since its launch, the Thar has been the face of our tough and rugged DNA, a continuation of our legacy and what Mahindra stands for. Today, as we launch the new avatar of this ever popular off-roader, the effort has been to enhance the appeal of a brand that is already a cult,” said Pravin Shah, President and Chief Executive Officer (Automotive) at M&M.

The Thar comes with a 2500cc CRDe (Common Rail Diesel Engine), which is a pricier but more fuel-efficient version of the typical diesel engine. As before, the vehicle continues to be among the most powerful in its class at 105bhp@3800 rpm and a torque of 274Nm from as low as 1800-2000 rpm.

The new variant, however, is only available on the BS-IV (a fuel-emissions standard) version but the older diesel engine-version, which is BS-III compliant, will still be sold by the company.

Launched in 2010, the Thar itself is an upgraded version of the Mahindra CL340, the MM 540 and is also central to Mahindra Adventure off-roading events.
